Neil in West Jersey
Hello, All. I am new to the forum. I am a metal detecting enthusiast from the Philadelphia area (originally from LI). I enjoy finding colonial and early US coins. My most recent success came last week when I dug this beauty of a half reale, dated 1789. It is a from the Nueva Guatemala mint, and it is counterstamped with the initials HS. My best guess is that it is a merchant's stamp but I have not yet been able to identify it. If you look closely you will notice the IV over III. There are very few known to exist. It is one of my best finds to date. Thanks for looking!
