sigistenz
This strange coin was sold on ebay. A junk coin at first glance, off color and porous from improper cleaning plus toning. Then the strange "80" strikes the eye. This does not seem to be an overdate of the time but is more likely a very recent job. Why should someone do that this carefully? The eagle is the 1778 one. Unknown for 1780 (as far as I know). Did someone intend to create an unheard of rarity? He would have offered it as such. But the seller did not proclaim any muling of dies or praise it as rare. I have no explanation as to that artifact. Sigi http://cgi.ebay.de/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewIt...E:B:WNA:DE:1123 -

sigistenz
I'll post better pictures when I receive the coin OOPS Alex, with ebay encoding bidders' pseudos, I didn't know bidders' identity. Please don't take it personal. The date/eagle discrepancy was of course tempting to buy the coin. Has that variant been published anywhere? Sigi - And I saw it, but I think that's another modern "novodel" but not only because of the "80":and the suspect colour like artificial patina, and the position of letters in KOPIEKI. I am not aware of any publications listing this coin. Curiously enough Adrianov lists a 1781 coin with that eagle, but not the 1780!
alexbq2
And I saw it, but I think that's another modern "novodel" but not only because of the "80":and the suspect colour like artificial patina, and the position of letters in KOPIEKI. I thought that the pitting and the color look as they should on a dug up corroded coin that was cleaned. I also though/think that there might be an overdate from 78 or 79 hidden in that poor resolution picture. Of course, other possibilities exist. I hope to examine this coin closely in the nearest future.

nicholasz219
I can see the concern about the letters in Kopecki....the E seems to sit significantly higher than the other letters. I am curious as to what makes everyone suspect of the color. I have limited experience with this series, so good advice is needed.
alexbq2
I'm afraid I'll not see this coin live. The seller (ivxer) already got 2 negative feedbacks on his last transactions, and I got my refund from eBay buyer protection.
alexbq2
Same coin sold again on eBay. This time by trys3, who like ivxer has no previous selling experience, and is clearly the same person. Ivxer got 2 negative feedbacks and 0 positives as a seller. I have a feeling that trys3 might not do much better. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=150497915253
PeterShell
Sometimes..I feel very deep need to organize a group which will pay a visit to such "nice sellers"... Although I was never cheated, few times someone was trying ... Pity that in case of ebay the influence on such people is very miserable... As I mentioned on diff place for 1 year I was fighting with such guys and explaining to ebay the rules that they should create ..or to pay money to some additional admin able to solve the problem faster - having simply the knowledge on numismatics... alexbq2
I think that eBay has improved in the last couple of years, at least my experience has. I had no problems getting my money back in this, and in some other, cases. I also noticed that my spending on eBay has increased, I feel that there is less risk so I bid more. I was getting extremely fed up with eBay at one point. I figure that things have started to improve after Meg Whitman left. All she did was raise commissions whenever shareholders clamored for better returns. I don’t see how a good CEO can let the brand name of the corporation fall into the gutter, and take no actions?! And they lost a huge market share to Amazon even though Amazon got into the game much, much later. I don’t envy California, once she becomes the new Governator! lol
