Ætheling Posted May 15, 2010 Author Report Share Posted May 15, 2010 It is a common mis-conception that the small silver coins (1d, 2d, 3d and 4d) were simply struck for Maundy purposes. This is infact not the case at this date, apparently (see Coincraft 2000), the small silver was struck primarily for circulation purposes and it was only in the 1800s that they became strictly for Maundy ceremonies.
