mel
I was wondering if someone could help me identify this coin. I do not collect coins But I found this at the bottom of a box of stuff I bought At a yardsale for $.50 I was thinking of passing it on to someone who would appreciate it more, So I was trying to find if it had any value at all. I know it is dirty But I don't Dare to clean it. Any help would be great. (the photo with dime and quarter is just for size comparison) Thanks
ccg
Looks like an antoninianus of Gordian III, with Fides holding a standard and sceptre. The colour and strike look a bit funny so I'll let spomeone else make a judgement as to whether this is original.
mel
Thanks for your help I hope we can figure out for sure what it is. Like is said. It is pretty cruddy and has black stuff and dirt on it, Someone told me to clean it because I am sure it would be pretty. But I dont dare to do anything to them, because someone also told me not to clean it. So I dont know what to do with it. Thanks

Thanks In general a collector who would want the coin would rather do the cleaning, if any, himself. With a little amateur cleaning you could turn a $20 coin into a $5 coin quite easily. I agree that the style is not exactly as I would expect so it needs to be seen in person by someone who has some experience with fakes. If you live near a larger city with coin shows that attract dealers in ancients, it would be best to take it there.
