MADISON
I am sure you too have great vision and plan in your banknote collecting journey. I too love French printed banknotes but unfortunately, I have already started with my area of specialization. Do share your experiences with us. Recently, I venture into something new in note like below.A few years back, you can have this note/s for as little as $50-100. Now, holy cow,in recent auctions, people were bidding as much as 2-3000 usd for this kind of collectable. BTW,the note is 150 years old and I do not usually buy vf+ note in my collection, but this is an exception rather than a rule. At the moment, notes like this is hot and scarce to find...anywhere in the world and the price is definitely not cheap..this note has lots of history for collectors and not everybody can appreciate this type of collectable, but to some it is a treasure..ENJOY ! That's a nice piece but beware of fake ones. It will be beneficial if you send it for PMG grading. Nowadays, anything that relates to China, is hot including antiques, paintings, sculptures, polteries and even traditional clothings. The demand coming from the mainland China is still very hot. I heard that the China silver dragon coins have already shot up in prices. I still have some with me.

MMMM
I'm not trying to pick on you, but it's likely too late for that on your previous purchases. You'll may be able to recoup most of the costs if you sell them individually or in small lots yourself on Ebay, but don't forget to factor in the time it takes to photograph/list/mail them. Personally, I collect a wide range of coins. Everything from the 5 for $1 modern world coins in dealer bulk bins, to near high grade ICCS/PCGS coins. On the <$5 coins I fully expect to make little if anything back when I resell them. Yet I am still adding to the two very large binders (1200+ coins) of 1950-2000 world coins worth 10c-$1 each. I do it because I enjoy it. Sorry, you do not get it. I was pointing out that a DEALER with a Store Front will probably charge you more than the value of the banknote. And a DEALER with a Store Front would probably pay less for than the value. Basic business. I collect banknotes that depict animals. My collection is small is about 2000 banknotes, not including the extras I which I sold to another collector for 1,800, which is still below wholesale. I was looking just to break even, and he gave me extra for the sleeves. So I am good with that. The SCWPM 15th edition had the value $2600. So the other collector is happy. Now your local dealer may be different, so results may vary as they say in commercials.

MMMM
I have a Hsien Feng Year 8 (1858) 2000 Cash note. Cool, I think it is still interesting that it is missing the seal. Is it an artist seal or regional seal? It is not the royal seal, that is the big orange one in the middle. I have seen them always in two forms for example the seal on yours: http://www.tomchao.com/as/china.html is similar to these: http://www.hosane.com/upload/picS09121/s09120384-1a.jpg http://www.calgarycoin.com/reference/china/chipap02.jpg http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/comm...00_wen-1859.jpg and all these have the other type of seal: http://www.numismondo.com/pm/chn/chnP.A4b2000CashYr41854.jpg http://www.thecurrencycollector.com/images...0_cash_note.jpg I have not seen one without a seal. Have you? Who is identified by the seals and why is not on that one note? Does it signify that the note was paid for and is canceled? Then maybe he has a uncanceled note? Don't know what the extra seal was for. Unable to read the writing on it. But the additional 21 character hand stamp on Madison's note indicates for use in Kiangsu Province. Should be Pick A5f instead of A5c.

Dave M
Madison, that's quite the banknote! I would imagine the research in this area would be very tricky. But beautiful notes, and I can see why someone might frame this and have it hanging in his office. You, and anyone else specializing in world notes, really should join IBNS. The journal alone is worth the entry fee. (www.theibns.org) Dave

MauMauNotes
hi everybody, hi madison in my opinion, if the collecting aims to the pleasure of '...' it's meant to 'lose money' (the very same way you would spend your money in a japanese restaurant for the pleasure of, or in travels, or in 50 days (lifetime) in an amusement park = for the pleasure of, lost money, enjoyed the day. if the collecting aims to the investment/business/earning (possible and respectable too) then i think even if you buy a gold coin in most of cases you won't 'earn' anything (unless you are a dealer yourself?) i think Gold is the one where you will lose the less money in every possible future investments ( a part the cases where you hit a bingo with a terribly rare note, coin, metal, stones etc ) togheter with a wonderful business period (the perfect conjunction u know) in everything else you are going to lose more (bank products sold as ' sure and safe earnings, or best investments : at least that kind of 'propaganda' its meant to start this dirty business, with the happiness of few and the sadness of many) maybe or possibly the best business is buying houses or apartments (and renting and later on selling) but that requires another amount of money non-comparable with a bunch of nice notes or coins. ========== i am not an expert, this is just my lecture of the situation ========== i, myself, would like to think that i get some 10-100$ worth notes and that when i'll be an OLD man, they won't be worth 0 to 25$ (that's a reason why i avoid 1) all that amount of 10c. 50c. 1-2 dollar worth notes -kazakhstan, kyrgizstan, or kingdom of banjei (what!), even if UNC, they will be worthless tomorrow (because today there are tons of UNC massive note-stocks you know...) but ok, like buying a cheap candy, if i am interested, thats ok but for how i see it, my scenario would be, ok even if i have paid 80 dollars today, for a good note, even if i won't get 80 dollars tomorrow, i will still get 50 (or whatever you want to say), 50 here plus 50 there plus 50 up and 50 down, whoever gets my collection within 50 years, will get a good bunch of cash. ofcourse i even eliminate the below aUNC notes, with our modern times, anything under aUNC is worthless, with the quantity of UNC available nobody will go for an expensive XF, F, VF or kinda. (the aUNC ofcourse is not about OLD notes where is not possible to get them for a normal person ) i do not pretend to earn, collecting, i pretend to enjoy and lose a little in most of things in life, if you spend the amounts of cash required for coins or notes collecting, you are ending with really nothing in hands (unless an UNC 50$ star-note will be worth 10$ tomorrow) imho IF i am thinking to earn, or save money, or i have the right connection and-or i make a business of it or i better keep zillions of my money at home (no bank fees, no bank hoaxes, nothing bought just pure cash : ofcourse with all the cons = a thief stealing your fortune and goodbye) but this scenario is the worse nightmare for Governments and Politicians and Big Earners, because they need and want your money, to take a piece of it. but perhaps, you are not going to pay any commission, you are not going to get your bought stuff losing value (you keep your cash at home), you dont risk your bank to crack (if everybody takes his money from a bank at the very same time, the bank won't have the money and will close down) sorry for my english and for the mixed talk ps: i sold a bunch of 250-280 banknotes (most circulated, many damaged) when i was 18 or something, and honestly i didnt even kept them safe from damage (what do you expect from a child) now i restarted 2 years ago (i'm mostly a standard coins collector) and there is no way im going to burn 100$ on 300 33cents notes(each) (right calculation ? lol )(nobody will want such a bundle -of hundred of similar cheap bundles) while i might find someone in the world interested in one note worth 70-100 or 130 $) = how to burn 100$ vs how to 'deposit in time' the same amount = i better be quiet now, or everybody follows the path and it will tend to lose(lower its value) ehe happy unc-crisp easter
MauMauNotes
ps: the only time i made a big-deal was when i forced my brother to come with me to the Vatican(Rome) and get the first Euro Issues paid like 12-16 euro (i dont remember) sold for 600 Euros (i have pushed him to go few days earlier and we would have gotten 6 sets (2 x person) but that day he was busy, and someone else got the business. (and when we went i was pissed off, trains pass once?get them or lose them)' = SO IT'S YOU A DAMN SPECULATING SHARK !!! no, if i didnt go there some other businessmen would have gotten what i have got = (plus i spent 400€ for the first flat 14'' monitor, so eventually that company and their workers have to thank me) plus a set of San Marino, and a proof set of the Vatican ordered online (the very first euro and proof) paid like... 60-100 (i dont really remember) sold for 1000+ all the rest, a part wonderful occasions(?) is not a business if you dont plan to make a business of it (hmm) but you cant pretend to make a business while you want a collection (? wth?)
