Known variety for Japan 1873 5 sen?

Recommended Posts

Very interesting.

The JNDA catalog shows three variations in calligraphy for "Meiji", and two variations for the "sen" character at different times during the eight-year life of the design; but doesn't mention any variations in the "roku" (six) character.

In fact, I can't recall seeing that wide-spaced version of the character on any coin.

Stroke two on the first coin looks too thin by photo. Any possibility that the die was filled with something? Is the bottom side sharp like the rest of the strike, or does it kind of blend into the fields somewhat? Unlike the rest of the design, the light does not seem to reflect off a sharp edge from the right side of the photo as the bottom side of stroke two is rather dull and seems to blend into the field.
