U.S. Bullion sales over the years

You can see clear evidence of recession-related bullion demand starting in late 2007. Also interesting to note is the jump in bullion sales shortly after 1998. Is that due to the statehood quarter series or due to the "dot com" bubble burst?

Actually I think it was due to the Y2K thing that got a lot of people worried that they'd be locked out of their bank systems and such for undetermined periods of time.
