hiho
I found a ticket stub on the way to work tonight from the Broadway play Mamma Mia. Someone paid $251.50 for a premium orchestra seat on New Years Day, 2010. And as people generally go to plays in pairs someone spent $503.00 for about three hours of entertainment for two people. As much as I do enjoy live theatre if I am going to spend $500 on something these days it will usually be a coin or two. Or three. I guarantee that three coins will provide me with more than three hours of entertainment. So I thought we should have a poll. With a little twist at the end. Would you rather go to a top Broadway show on New Years Day, you and your guest sitting way up front in the plush orchestra seats with an amazing view of everything. Or would you rather have a solid gold Swiss Schutzenfest Medal, one of only 400 minted. Not 400000, 400. About the size and weight of a US $10 gold piece. You can have either the gold medal or take your wife/husband to a hit Broadway show. Please cast your vote for one or the other. And then please have your wife/husband cast their vote. I know, you can only vote once so you will have to register your spouse here for this to work, hopefully you are still on speaking terms after the holidays. No one said this would be easy. And if you can’t get your spouse to vote then that’s OK too. This is supposed to be fun, not work. At the very least let's consider this a science experiment to see if we get a 50/50 split on the voting. Or otherwise. Humor me if you will. Poll closes on 02-01-10. Thanks for participating! Art
The coin is beautiful and I'd love to have it or one of it's sisters but my wife and I both love theater. We' did Momma Mia at the Fox in Atlanta --- WOW! We love ABBA and the Fox is very special to us as we spent many enjoyable nights with close friends there in the 70's when we live in Atlanta. The coin price is way outside what I would consider spending on a coin in the first place. I usually spend several months thinking about a coin that costs 10% of that. My wife feels the same way. Ætheling
I'd go for the coin, theatre does nothing for me whatsoever.
Dockwalliper
I voted for the gold and my wife says gold too. She saw Momma Mia in Toronto from the 2nd row. Even when I told her she could go to any show she voted gold.
thedeadpoint
For me, it depends on who I'm trying to impress (i.e. how hot my date is) with the show tickets. But now I really want to buy that medal...
Saor Alba
I like theatre, but the medal I can always enjoy. Since you headed to the theatre, can I have the medal?

Benz Gemz
I would go for the medal, I'm not much for theater, and broadway, well, if I was headed to NY now it would by NYINC, but it's not going to be, instead I'm off to FUN Where I hope to spend enough to take the whole family to the theater and buy more than 2 coins! bill
Sorry Art, if I had my choice...... That doesn't mean I wouldn't buy the theater tickets and take my wife, but if it came down to a choice......
hiho
I like theatre, but the medal I can always enjoy. Since you headed to the theatre, can I have the medal? I walked past the theatre on my way to work, I believe the last Broadway show I attended was "Lion King". I took my wife and kids in 2000 back when the kids were young. Tickets were $100 each and it was definitely worth it. Pretty sure that you could locate a copy of this medal during your European travels if you tried. My wife and I both love ABBA too but we both voted for the medal. Perhaps I should post this poll on a theatre forum and see what happens... banivechi
If I am lucky to get visa, I will visit New York in the next months with my GF. But considering how much money we will need for plane tickets and so on, and even maybe for a trip to Aruba, I'm sure that tickets for Broadway shows (at this price) are at the end of the list. I've voted for medal, but in normal times a tichet for Broadway sounds very, very exciting.

The reason, we were in the centre second row back from the orchestra pit which was an amazing place to be - you could feel the heat from the flames on the stage. But my best tickets ever were for Lebedi Ozero(Swan Lake) in Odessa, 1st row very centre and only 100 Hryven, about $12 tickets because box office saved best tickets for last minute walk ups before show started at 18:00, and we walked up at 17:55. I think theatre and ballet much more popular in Ukraine, and really I have not a problem with that.
ikaros
Medal, easy. If the show was Spamalot! (especially with Tim Curry), then it might've been a harder call. If it'd been an original cast production of Chess or Phantom, *then* we're talking ticket.

ikaros
I saw Spamalot! w/o Curry - meh. What is Chess?'80s musical with a Cold War theme. Coincidentally to 'Mamma Mia', the music was written by half of Abba. Two semi-hits came out of it -- "Nobody's Side" and " ". Still... no one has answered my question: What does the girl that the ticket comes with look like? John Barrowman, given an absolute choice... I don't date girls.
