Is it possible to say by looking at the pictures if this rouble is authentic? I found a small discrepancy between the image on this picture and the image from Krause catalog: the cross on the crown is not exactly at same spot in relation to inscription around the perimeter of the coin.

There are several specialists in Catherine rouble die varieties active on this forum who will be happy to answer this question for you. My only comment is that it is almost never possible to say definitively that a coin is authentic by looking at a picture. You can say with certainty that it is NOT authentic, or you can say it is PROBABLY authentic. Those are really the only choices.

On this coin I am a little bothered by the weak detail on the portrait but I have to defer to the specialists.

Looks normal for an issue of this era. The cross pointed at different letters as part

of the internal security at the Mint. The St. Petersburg Mint did not use master hubs

(for the entire design, including lettering) until the mid 1840s.

The coin looks nice, but those digs on the neck and on the cheek are distructing... at the current price.
