mmarotta
The discussion about astronaut Gus Grissom's "Mercury" dimes brings up another topic. Here is a picture of two medals that I have that were struck from metal from the recovered booster stage of Apollo 11. NASA contracted the Lincoln Mint to produce them. NASA then awarded the medals in cardboard holders that read: "For your contribution to the U.S. Space Program." These came ex Joseph Scafetta ex Jerry Ledet. The obverse reads "The Eagle has landed." An astronaut stands to right of an American flag on a moonscape. The Reverse says: "This medal contains metal from spacecrafts Columbia and Eagle that took Astronauts Armstrong, Aldrin and Collins on their historic Apollo 11 mission that resulted in the first landin of man on the Moon" (Image removed 24Sept2010 - mm)
