Thanks Art , i surely will. Thanks to Peter :ninja: , Edward l wow not a bad start to my hammered's.That puts me in this kind of ballpark, 17 June 1239 – 7 July 1307.

And its Edward Longshanks ..wow.. a stunning addition to my early Scots coinage , ill need an Edward ll now ;) I realise its not an addition to any Scots coinage but in light of the history they share i feel they belong peacefully on the same page in my album.

Thanks guys,im off for cocoa and a read at Edward I life and times , great stuff.

Congrats on the hammered, looks good! Ive got a couple of the early pennies, it always amazes me that I can own something that is three quarters of a millenium old, makes your mind wonder to who might have held it, what they may have bought with it etc. Enjoy it

Thanks Mat25 , im enjoying it already and i only have pics :ninja: You hit the nail right on the head Mat25 , it really does make a person wonder where its been all this time , how many collections , whos collections and as you say what things might it have seen in its day of circulating.A real piece of history and swiftly becoming my favorite coin.

...continuing on from Mat25's most excellent point , i mean..can you imagine the guys that struck this coin ..or the first person to give or recieve it ..how many hands its passed through down through the ages , did any of them think that one day this coin would be on its way by flight to a country that was then unheard of..probably not.

Was it lost at any time..how many times has it been lost ..and found..how many albums has it helped fill..sigh..a coin like that really shows the futility of man and his mortality..think im going off it a bit lol kiddin , im hooked and cant wait for the next.

That is why I collect coins, for all that attached history and the way it makes you think about where it has been and what it has seen, each coin takes you on a different journey. And what else could you buy for a similar price that is so old, has all that history, so much detail and I guess artistic quality? I cant think of anything!

So what is the next hammered coin you have your eye on?

I have to admit i was a little surprised at how reasonable the pricing was for this one.Sure its not in the best condition but its not the worst ive seen and its whole , im looking at adding to the hammered Mat25 , sure enough , but where i should be looking im going to have to rely on you guys. You might have guessed i havnt the largest budget on the forum :ninja: but im keen.

I have an Elizabeth l sixpence 1565 but i dont think its hammered ? Also a Queen Anne shilling but that one isnt hammered either. You are all correct that the Edward l didnt set me back too badly , very reasonable really , so ill probably look for one or similar in better condition and definately an Edward ll , after that..anybodies guess.

Would love to see the elizabeth sixpence and the anne shilling if you get time to photograph them! My first hammered was an elizabeth sixpence, it got me hooked and now ive got about 20 hammered coins. I think your sixpence must be hammered as if I remember correctly there were no milled sixpences produced in 1565, I may be wrong though.

Collecting hammered pennies shouldnt dent your pocket too much, depending on which ones you buy, some of the early or rare ones can cost a lot! I picked up the henry III penny below for £35 which works out at about $50, I dont mind telling you where you can get one if you would like to know. Ive recently bought a couple of hammered medieval groats (fourpences) which you can pick up for not too much more than a decent penny would set you back, maybe $150 - $200 for a nice one. You should talk to ye olde collector though, he is definately the hammered expert of this forum!

I look forward to seeing the sixpence and shilling!

That is just stunning Mat25 , absolutely beautiful.Yes , ill be happy to get photos of the sixpence and shilling , im sure i have photos of the sixpence , ill take photos of the shilling.Again , these are not in ideal condition but far from scrap or useless , nice clear designs and dates but some wear and tear.

Ill do that this evening as Mrs B assures me i do need to accompany her to town...bah... i should say upfront by the way that i am British, living and working with my Uncle Sam and loving it.

I realise my profile might be misleading in that , so thats cleared up and itll make sense now if i use British terms here and there without thinking , which i do often...not think that is :ninja:

My flying eagle cent tracking number tells me its in town , that one excites me.Definately some pics of that one will be forthcoming also.Waiting on the mailman as we speak.

Oh..yes please Mat25 , id very much like to get hold of a coin such as that , please do feel free to PM or message as you see fit , thanks
