Scottishmoney
Few nationalist movements have ever been so led, so determined, such a force to be reckoned with, that believed in peaceful non-violence as a more powerful weapon in achieving their goals as the campaign initiated by Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, born on 2 October 1869 in Porbandar, India. A great man whom aspired at times to live to be 100 years old, his life was cut down by an assassin's bullet at 78 years. But his influence lasted well beyond his mere 78 years, indeed, he has influenced notables such as Lech Walesa, Martin Luther King, and Vaclav Havel in their struggles against seemingly immovable and incorrigible regimes. India has honoured Mr. Gandhi by the placement of his image on her banknotes: Few men, are worthy of such honours. Politicians are featured prominently on the banknotes of many countries, but their individual achievements pale in comparison to Mr. Gandhi's. Balaji Murthy
It must be, my friend in New Delhi sent me several sets of these. He got them all at the bank. That is correct. Here is the relevant page from Reserve Bank of India, which shows all current denominations. 20 Rupee denomination was first introduced in 1972. http://www.rbi.org.in/scripts/ic_banknotes.aspx The current design featuring Gandhi for all denominations was introduced in 1996, although a slightly different, but very similar design had already been used in 1987, when India introduced the Rs 500 denomination. Also, in 1969, India issued its only commemorative series featuring Gandhi in the then current denominations of 1, 2, 5, 10 and 100 for the Gandhi birth centenary. Hope this helps. - Balaji
