Constitutional status at time of issue; A republic under British suzerainty between 1854-77 & 1881-1900. Capital; Pretoria. Currency system; 12 Pence = 1 Shilling,20 Shillings = 1 Pond. First day of issue; 1st of January 1898. The South African Republic was one of the first 2 countries to declare postal orders to be legal tender as an emergency currency during the 2nd Boer War (1899-1902).
