constanius Posted May 30, 2009 Report Share Posted May 30, 2009 Spending a penny is an english euphemism for going to the washroom, because for a long time the charge to enter a cubicle in the english lavatories was 1 penny. Here are two 'emergency pennies' which I acquired from the Feathers Public House in the mid sixties. Only taken me 40+ years to post, but then the internet did not exist, along with cell phones etc. How did we manage!!! Because they are still sealed I do not know their dates. Seems that having a penny set aside for those urgent and pressing calls of nature was an American idea. The only thing about my example is that the `encaser' sure had a mean streak by making this particular penny incredibly difficult to `spend'..................
