elverno
1840 Translation aux Invalides du corps de Napoléon, France Bramsen 1982 - Details - 25mm With considerable pomp and circumstance Napoleon was exhumed from the modest grave under the weeping willows his body occupied from 1821 and transported back to France in 1840. After arriving in Paris it was placed in the Invalides to rest until transferred to his tomb in 1861. Nearly all of the 20 or so medals that were produced to commemorate his arrival in Paris are masterworks of engraving and I would include this small (about 1 inch) one as well in that description. Another remarkably inexpensive medal from my source on eBay. As a contemporary to 1840 it is marked on the edge with the word cuivre and the prow of an ancient ship, thereby dating its strike between September 1842 and 1845. Ian
Nice find, and no doubt even better in the hand than the photo. I like!
