2008 Lincoln Penny Cracked

Recommended Posts

I found an UNC 2008 penny with a crack from one edge to the other only on the obverse side. Crack starts at about the 1:00 position and works it's way through the portrait the the otherside at about the 9:00 position. Has anyone seen any others circulating or heard anything about? Thx!

Hi Chief,

You probably see a "die crack." Each coin is struck by two dies - one for the obverse and one for the reverse. After a few hundred thousand strikes, the dies start showing wear. The die that struck your coin developed a large crack in it. Usually they are tiny and hard to see but since yours goes right across the coin, it is more desirable. I don't think it commands much value over a penny.

If you look through a week's worth of change and examine every detail, you'd probably find a handful of coins with die cracks or other mint errors. This Error forum has a great bunch of threads devoted to the different types of errors you could find in your every day change!
