I took a look at the untranslated parts for Paul. Is there some conversion table somewhere for things like zolotnik, dolya, Dutch stuivers, etc., perhaps in grams or Troy ounces? It seems like it doesn't make too much sense to just translate such terms unless we can somehow correlate these with modern-day standards of alloy fineness, weights, etc. These terms were also commonly used internationally at the time, so maybe it shouldn't be too hard to find such a conversion table. But I don't know where to look! :confus:

Some useful clues here:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Obsolete_units_of_measure

There are a lot of units and Standards in the Corpus that are completely unknown to me. Cologne Marks, Zentners etc.

We were struggling with some of these in the Poland translations, for example:

If memory is correct, Randolph Zander published (wrote?) something in JRNS about the Courland talers, Paul's Yefimki and "heavy" coins and the Dutch Stuiver many years ago in reference to the Baltic trade "dollars".

In the meantime, I've found some useful information in Uzdenikov, Severin, and in the article "Rules for Gold Deposits at the St. Petersburg Mint, 1897" in the summer 2010 issue of the JRNS.

Thanks for all the helpful pointers! :art: Unfortunately, I won't have much time to do any translating now for the next month or so... :(

Started moving the Grand Duke project over to a new (and more general) translation wiki I've created:

http://russian-numismatic-translation-project.wikidot.com/

This site is much easier for page creation and editing and the look & feel is nice (I think). I've brought over one article so far, the Alexander I - Introduction.
