FrankC
Could you post a better, clearer scan. Consentrate on the characters rather than anything else. It ooks like one of the Soviet Farmers Bank's. The pictures are almost certainly Lenin and Marx The charters along the top look very much like Je Ho Shen ** Yin Hang which is the Bank of Rehher Sheeng On the reverse is the figure 5 but I cannot make out the rest so a clearer scan would help Post a large image on Picture Bucket or so other hosting site Regards Frank
FrankC
Cloth notes were issued by the Workers and Farmers Bank of the Sichuan-Shaanxi Provincial Soviet Government. This Soviet (on the borders of Sichuan and Shaanxi provinces) was founded in 1933. It issued a wide range of notes and copper and silver coins between 1933 and 1935, which became very popular. This note was issued in 1933, a year before the Chinese government launched its 'extermination campaign' against the Communists, forcing them to abandon the Soviets and set out on the Long March. FrankC
Originaly I was under the impression that they were one banknote back and front now I realise they are not. They are uni-faced notes The bottom one is 5 fen dated 1935 Chinese Soviet Republic Government Bank Northwest Branch The top banknote characters in between the heads of Lenin and Marx looks like 1 dollar. I could do with a younger pair of eyes Hope this helps Frank
anil2
The bottom one is 5 fen dated 1935 Chinese Soviet Republic Government Bank Northwest Branch Frank Hi Frank, This is a great help. Yes, now I can confirm from the WPMC that the second one is Chinese Soviet Republic Government Bank Northwest Branch 1935 issue of 5 Fen. The Pick number I could identify is P-S3276. But it doesn't say it is available in cloth variety. So it seems like a new find. But now I am very glad that I got it. I am not able to upload the high resolution images on this forum for the first note. So, please see if any other info you can provide about that note for better identification. Thank you for all your help. Anil
FrankC
Could you do a higher resolution scan then just crop the characters on the top and post that. I just need to be able to recognise the characters better, I have already done a print out but the more I zoom in the less distinct it becomes. The World Paper Money ...... does not have everything that was ever used. These notes were produce and used at a very difficult time in China's history there were shortages of everything and so they would have used whatever they could lay their hands on. Scottishmoney
I will caution you that this early communist stuff from China is some of the most forged of early Chinese numismatics, the authentic stuff is reasonably scarce, and prices reflect that. Hi, Do you know of any website or any book or if you can give me some pointers to identify the fakes from the real ones? I am mainly interested in old non-paper cloth banknotes of early China. Thanks. Anil

chinnotes
Both notes are modern forgeries, I am pretty sure... The first note imitates a note issued by the Workers and Farmers Bank of West Fujian (or Fukien) 閩西工農銀行 (min xi gong nong yin hang). The 2nd one I cannot figure out... Erwin P.S.: I see now that I can use here in this forum Chinese characters, that makes everything much easier...

chinnotes
Well, the first note: .The “Workers and Farmers Bank of West Fujian” issued several different notes, in 1930 and 1931 respecticely. From several Chinese books we have quite a few informations about these issues. And it is evident, that all these notes were made of paper! The 1 Yuan note dated 1930 (your note) should be of paper, not of cloth. And its color should be light green, not black. On the lower right of your note we can trace a signature, but this is the wrong signature. The real signature (although it cannot be deciphered) looks quite different. In China it is believed that the producer of this special cloth note did not have a real note at hand, but only a black and white picture of it, most probably the one pictured in the Chinese book “The money of the strongholds of the Chinese revolution”. Anyhow the "Workers and Farmers Bank of West Fujian” never issued any cloth notes. In this phase of the revolution only two other instituions issued cloth notes… The 2nd note should also be a paper note! This note never was issued as a cloth note. It imitates P. S3276, although in the Pick catalog only the first 4 characters of the title are given. The complete title as written on the note reads 國家銀行西北分行 (guojia yinhang xibei fenhang = National Bank, Northwest branch). The real paper note did not bear the red round stamp found on the cloth note. Chinese specialists on communist paper money speculate that the red stamp was printed on the cloth note to make it look more authentical. The real note has a broad white margin at its right side, missing on the cloth note… Erwin
