Blackhawk
I've picked up a few different Masonic mark pennies over the years, but none as curious as this one. The design on the obverse is somewhat like the bust on old Corsican coins, and I haven't seen one with the denarius denomination (if indeed that;s what it is) before. The mark on the keystone resembles the Chinese 5, but I don't think that's what it is. I believe that the Occident chapter is in Canada. I know that Masons don't like to talk about these things, but I do think that this one has a neat design.

just carl
Interesting looking coin. Wonder if that is the real year of a commemorative notation.
Steven_2b1ask1
The mark you see in the center of the keystone should be the mark or identifier of the origional person that was given the coin in lodge. This would have been added by that person to the coin.
thedeadpoint
I think one of our newer members is a mason. Maybe he'll be kind enough to add something to this thread.

constanius
From 1879 "PROCEEDINGS OF THE GRAND CHAPTER ROYAL ARCH" NO. 77, OCCIDENT, TORONTO. In January last I installed the Principals and Officers of Occident. The chapter has always been well worked and prosperous. Much of the success of this chapter is due to the untiring energy of R. E. Comp. James Wilson, P.G.S. through whose efforts the present fine Chapel Hall on Queen St. West was secured.
Steven_2b1ask1
So it could be something like THL? Quite probable that it is initials. It would be interesting to contact that lodge and find out if in their records a person was a member that year with those initials.

The Analog Kid
interesting.. Just to add a little fuel to the Masonic fire I found this in a junk box at work. I've been told the chapter is in New York. But I have yet to hear from anyone who has seen one on a smoothed obverse of a large cent

constanius
When flipped open!!! Posted previously in exonumia, thought it should be here too. I have never seen another like it. Notice the initials THL for T. H. Lundington? Could be the same man (if the monogram is for T. H. Ludington) mine is from a Montreal chapter, Blackhawk's from Toronto. Very young mason in Toronto later moves to Montreal?

Blackhawk
That's very neat Constanius! I don't know much about the Masons, but they do have some neat stuff. Once in a while the local coin shop gets a Masonic watch fob, etc., in and they've got little hinged compartments and the like on them. Pretty cool.
