Do you mean a US one cent piece or a British Penny?

If it is US, back in 82 the comp. was changed to mainly Zinc and the weight is less than the old copper cents. The grey is probably from some sort of paint/colouring applied by someone later on.

yep, it is US and post 1982 so I'm thinking (like most everyone else) the very small amount of copper coating got stripped off and you are left with the "silvery" zinc colour. What did you clean it with? Acid, Brasso, Detergent...?

this is a 1995-d us penny i cleaned it and it came out looking very silver anymore replys would be helpfull.

 

That's typical of zincoln cents. US cents aren't made of bronze these days, but of zinc. They're plated with copper. The plating comes off pretty easily.
