janneen
Hello! I'm just wondering if someone owns this coin or has at least seen it. I haven't ever seen it in an auction. The other denominations (10,15 and 20K) are more common. Janne

I do not, however, have the 1860 of this denomination with eagle of 1859. The 1860 10, 15, and 20 kopecks of 1860 (with eagle of 1860) are reasonably often seen but the 1860 10 kopecks with eagle of 1861 is difficult to find. It took me several years to find one but by luck Alexander Basok had one for sale about 10 years ago and I bought it. RWJ

RWJ now I'm jealous I have seen 5 kopeks 1860 of 1859 type in a few auctios in past few years. It's still a true rarity. I wonder why they changed eagle designs so often back then: -1858, 1859-60, 1860 and 1861- have all desigs of their own (15K has also a 1860-61 design which is more like a variety because differences are small compared to 1861. If I remember correctly the size of eagle is different). J

J The design was changed in early 1860 because the fineness of the subsidiary silver coins (5, 10, 15, and 20 kopecks) was lowered from 868/1000 to 750/1000. It is likely that there were problems in striking the new design and the eagle was revised in the latter part of 1860. The change is most easily seen in the tail feathers. janneen
5K 1860 of 1860 type is actually the only coin missing from my russian silver typeset (1811-1917). Types are classified according to Uzdenikov's main types+special design of 1860. It makes 42 coins or so. I have also a few commemoratives but I've been planning to sell them (I like complete collections and for example family rouble is not accessible for me; 1859 is nice though). If someone has an extra 5 kopeks silver of 1860 type I'm interested! J
