A few more Conder tokens

Recommended Posts

Just wanted to share. :ninja:

Well thank you for sharing, they are quite beautiful. I like the "We Three Blockheads" with just two numerical challenged individuals. Very satirical , two token collectors facing each other and being ridiculed (because the tokens were not made for redemption, just to make money of off collectors). Google Book Apparently the third Blockhead was the one who had brought the token, so with the two on the token and himself it equalled 3.

A little explanation......quite entertaining :ninja:

Taken from another site

"Denton's London (Middlesex) copper Conder farthing token 1795. Obverse: Two face-to-face 'worthies': "WE THREE BLOCKHEADS BE 1795". Reverse: Text on six lines, the first and last curved: "DENTON DEALER IN COINS HOSPITAL GATE SMITHFIELD". Plain edge. Denton was a coin dealer with a business at Hospital Gate, Smithfield, London. He published the first four volumes of "Vitrtuoso's Companion and Coin Collector's Guide" from this address in 1795-96. Denton fancied himself as a wit. The answer to "Who is the third blockhead?" in the riddle "WE THREE BLOCKHEADS BE" is supposedly "YOU!". It was maybe funnier then!"

I have about 60 tokens which I should post on Omnicoin but since I changed to collecting medals they are not getting the attention that they deserve. Perhaps I will post some of them on this forum.

PS. Love your photography, very professional looking.

Very nice coins - particularly liked the second one, interesting images esp the stag prancing and it looks in fantastic condition too. Now where did you get those goodies from?
