bobh
Here is the link to the PCGS price list for Indian Head cents (IHC): http://www.pcgs.com/prices/PriceGuideDetail.aspx?c=44 Please look for the entries for 1865, "plain 5" and "fancy 5". I am copying them here for your convenience: Grade: 4 12 40 55 60 63 64 65 66 67 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1865 Fancy 5 BN 7 18 37 55 90 150 180 250 450 - 1865 Fancy 5 RB - - - - 100 200 285 460 2,000 - 1865 Fancy 5 RD - - - - 115 350 550 2,300 20,000 - 1865 Plain 5 BN 10 20 40 65 90 150 200 275 350 - 1865 Plain 5 RB - - - - 110 210 525 925 850 - 1865 Plain 5 RD - - - - 135 325 500 5,500 7,500 - Prices are fairly similar except at the highest grades, where all of a sudden there is a big discrepancy at MS-66! In particular, MS-65 prices are better for "plain 5", but why are prices in MS-66 exactly opposite ... and $20,000??? Is this perhaps just a typo? Seems unlikely, considering that there is a price history for this grade... Thanks!
bobh
What ... do you mean nobody wants to trade me their MS-66 1865 fancy 5 for a nice UNC 1935 Buffalo nickel?

numismatic nut
I think its because of a strange math thing. Here is how my brain thinks of it. 1865 mintage: aprox: 35.7 mill. 1865 est. number of varites minted: 2.3 mill. 1865 varites in good 230,000 1865 varites in MS-67 23,000 1865 varites est. to survive 5,750 1865 fancy five 1437 1865 plain five 4312 This is just a guess, but it is how I think of it (my thinking may be completly wrong). LostDutchman
this is kind of stretching it but maybe the fancy fives were not struck as well as the regular coins... making them a harder coin to find in 66? hence the price jump? what is the pop of fancy fives in 66 red anyways? just carl
From past experience with that web site just wait a few days and all prices will change anyway. Possibly the entire coin will be deleted as no such thing or something. Exageration of courese but just keep watching and you wil see amazing changes in prices.
