Large copper 5 Kopeck pieces were really used (and still may be used) to treat bruises. Copper has very good thermal conductivity and relieves burning bruises and bee stings. And it is not actually Russian invention. In works of Aristotle (384-322 BCE) already mentioned that large pieces of copper may be used to relief bruises. Usage of copper 5 Kopeck pieces in Russia to treat bruises is centuries long. Copper is also used to treat other medical conditions and broken bones.
