ken8400
hi , my first post. I started collecting coins about 6 months or so ago. I ordered the proof set from the mint. I have a question though , what is ment by the word "clad". I saw a few sets I wanted to buy on eBay and it listed them as clad. Does this mean a lower grade of coin? Thank you for your time. gxseries
Clad is a term used to describe sandwich coin metal. In US coinage, it is inner copper core and nickel on the outer. The original purpose of this is to create a coin that has similar looks but with lower cost.
ken8400
Thank you for your reply. Does it decress the coins value? Thank you , Ken
gxseries
Ken, clad is not something that would affect the value of a coin unless it's improperly mixed which may affect the value. Welcome to coinpeople by the way
just carl
Thanks for the reminder. Every year I order about 10 to 15 sets of each proofs and uncirc's. I use them for Christmas presents. Each year I have to order a little less though. As I get older I keep loosing friends and relatives.
corkykile
I received my 08 mint proof set and it took only a few minutes to decide to return them for replacements. You would not believe how many gouges, scratches, and spots were on them. Disappointing, very disappointing. If the replacements come back in a similar condition I am not going to reorder them from the mint, it is probably better if I just go to a dealer or get them on line from one of my trusted sellers. corky
