Q. about World-Wide Coins auction results

Funny you mention a 1853 2 kopek Rarenum. Steve, do you have a picture comparison of a EM and a BM 2 kopek? Just happens that I have one 1853 2 kopek but the mintmark is not visible due to corrosion. (chances are it's a EM)

Hi gxseries. The 1853BM 2K is the $110,000 coin that appeared at World Wide this week for the first time since 1913 (that I know of).

They're _extremely_ rare. The world-wide coin is the first high-quality image I have of one, so I will post the BM and EM side by side when I get a chance.

(1) Tolstoi Sale (1913) Lot 2226 (illustrated). 190 Marks for the 1853 Set (most of that price is undoubtedly for the 2K).

(2) Klingert Sale 1910. Lot 2808 (if I'm reading the catalog correctly). 10 Marks.

(3) World Wide May 2008

Haven't seen any others yet though I haven't gone through the Ekaterina catalogs fully.

Steve

I was surprise coin was missing in Blank Collection. :ninja:

190 Marks in 1913 is about equivalent to $2,500 today (by the consumer bundle metric).

This is the coin that I have:

The thing is that the variety does not match from what I have seen in molotok and conros for EM 2 kopek although I have only seen two different varieties so far that is decent enough for comparsion. One is for the digit "2" for 2 kopek and the other variety is the "1" for 1853.

Mind you, this coin was really hopeless last year and the entire surface was covered in crust. Even the digit "2" wasn't really visible like in current state right now. I just pulled out from the "cleaning" process that it was in for the past few months. (oh the horror)

Im also curious as to the results. Does Elmen mail out results only to lot winners? With no website, how does WWC usually do this?

I bid on a few lots, but doubtful i will not be outbid on any of them.

He used to snail mail a hard copy of the prices realized out after the sale. I don't know if that is his current practice.

Bob, are you smiling because you won? or because some coins you already have just got a whole lot more valuable? :ninja:

Well, it looks like I probably won the 1909 10 roubles ... won't know for sure, I guess, until Mr. Elmen has notified me. ;)

Any chance to see photos of these coins online somewhere? And what news of that 1853 2 kop BM (proof, was it)?

No, unless winner scans and posts (or someone scans the catalog).

1853BM...$110,000. We were discussing it at length earlier in the thread but perhaps it's not obvious that's what we were talking about.

I won 2 lots, both silver Mining Ingots missing from my collection, so not everything is going back to mother Russia (or mother Switzerland in Bob's case :ninja: ).

Steve,

Congratulations :ninja: .

You have started collect silver Ingots?? ;)

Alexbq2 just out from "rare edge” discussing on two forums, so it takes time to read earlier discussing in topic. ;)

Steve,

Congratulations ;) .

You have started collect silver Ingots?? ;)

Thanks. Yes...ingots.... As you know, there are some special pieces of silver tucked away in the darker corners of my trays. And besides, I don't have any more space for plate Grivnas so I didn't even bid on the two in this auction. :ninja:

  • 2 weeks later...
Does anyone have a picture of the 1853 BM 2 kopek? Quite curious whether mine is anywhere close to the rare BM 2 kopek as it doesn't match the EM 2 kopeks varieties I've seen so far.

Yes. I have the illustration from Ekaterina 26. I am not presently set up to

post pictures to the newsgroup but could send you the jpeg privately if you

send me an e-mail address via PM.

There are some slight differences between the BM and EM coinages of that

year, which is to be expected as each mint had its own hubs for making dies.
