Seems like it's really hard to find a good quality coin. Will you suggest to go for only NCG graded coins?

Better buy graded coins to protect your investment. or from coin dealers you can trust or have positive experience. Later you will have your own way see the coins with mechanical problem in your experience.

Rarenum, I do appreciate your valuable advice. It's very nice to have people like your self sharing knowledge with new collectors like my self!

I want to invest 1000-1500$ on rare coin that will always be on demand. Any suggestions what (russian coin(s)) I can buy for this amount of money?

You can buy rouble 1883 Coronation in MS Grade for about 50% and safe 50% for rouble you like.

You mean 1883 ruble 750-800$ in MS Grade is a descent price? What do you think about this coin?http://www.mycoindealer.com/Alexander-III-5-Roubles-1889-Y-42-AU-55-by-NGC-Rare-p-1522.html

Rarenum, thanks again

Orest, you probably will not like my answer because I am not going to recommend any coin(s) to buy.

Instead, I am going to recommend that you do a lot of reading.

It is true that some people make money in coins, but others lose money.

The difference between the 2 groups is that those who make money are almost always collectors who have spent much time and effort to learn about what they are buying and whose purpose is to form a coherent collection. Those who lose money are almost always investors who rush into a hot market with the objective of turning a profit and buy without knowing much about what it is that they are buying.

Someone (I think it was Dave Bowers) once suggested that the best thing to do is to tend to the collection and the investment will take care of itself. I think that is very good advice.

The best way to enter the coin market is to find something that interests you and collect in an area which is not hot right now, so you have less competition for the coins. What might that be?

The coins that will likely do well in the future are those which will be in demand. Which countries will be prosperous in 10 to 20 years? It's not easy to say, but India seems to be growing economically. Maybe Indian coins (about which I know nearly nothing) will be in demand from a newly prosperous group of collectors in that country.

Will Russian coins continue to go up? Maybe. Prices have risen dramatically and might continue to do so (or not). Certainly they don't seem to be slowing down.

So, read books and study the coins and when you have developed a "feel" for the coins, then start buying with the objective of forming a meaningful collection, rather than whatever looks like a hot deal. Otherwise, it is almost guaranteed that you will make painful mistakes.

Maybe that doesn't sound very helpful, but it is the best advice that I can offer you.

What are your predictions for the future? Do you think prices will keep rising?

grivna, you made a good point and in fact i started doing some readings. I just finished reading Adrianov's catalogue year 2001 and Konros's for 2007. I gained some knowledge and hope to learn more in the near future. I do not consider buying coins as an investment, but just as anyone else, I hope my coins at least will not drop in price in near future.

One more point. I have absolutely no interest in indian coins, that's why I would never collect them. Russia is the country of my birth and i enjoy it's coins. it's something that connects me to my home land. By the way, if anyone will ever need assistance with translation, you can always count on me:-)

Orest, I am not plugging Indian coins. It was just an example chosen (perhaps poorly) to try to illustrate my point.

Then Russian coins are an excellent choice for you, chosen for a good reason. :ninja:

I might take you up on that offer some day. My ability to read and write Russian is very limited and I do not learn as quickly as I would if I were younger. ;)
