gxseries
Wow that looks very wrong. The rims are awfully thick which is not what I was expecting. Where did you find that coin? Welcome to coinpeople by the way.

Welcome to coinpeople by the way. Thanks for the welcome. I purchased this on Ebay. I live in California,US and I purchased it from someone in Greece!! I know quite a silly thing to do but I thought that since they had a 100% positive feedback I was safe. Well was I ever wrong. I did the magnet test and it stuck like glue. grivna1726
I did the magnet test and it stuck like glue. That alone condemns it. Genuine 1833 roubles are struck in silver and are not magnetic. Sorry. I hope you can get your money back.
gxseries
I'm sure it's a counterfeit. Sorry to hear that There are stories of counterfeits popping out from Greech as these sellers appearently buy them from China which is the main source of problem. I wasn't expecting a rather common coin like that to be counterfeited. As for a reference, here is what a genuine coin from the same era should look like: There is NEVER a rim that is as thick as yours - which is one of the tellsigns of casting. Also, the weight of a genuine coin from that era should be 20.73grams. If it is significantly lighter as I suspect it's cast in either nickel or iron, it's unfortunately a counterfeit. I highly recommand you contact the seller to demand a refund immediately else if you did pay with paypal, you should be able to open a dispute as you purchased a counterfeit. Good job in finding this forum to confirm your suspection.

I made another Rouble purchase for much more money than this one and I have been reading here on this forum that this particular Ebay seller is less than desirable. I think that I will post the auction here. I have not received that coin yet. The Ebay seller of the other coin is "cashsticker"

It really is a shame.

Ebay has been an effective enabler for the counterfeiters and, in my opinion, has failed miserably in terms of providing due diligence regarding counterfeits on its site. alexbq2
I noticed that on all 174* mmd roubles from china, and on this one there is some flattening on the rim at 12 or at 6 o'clock. Could it be caused by some part of their manufacturing process?
