Another Question I'm trying to catalogue my coins and I'm doing a numistematic research on the coins , Can anyone tell me what is the origin of the observe picture in Modern Kopeeks and Moder Roubls. I know it is something to do with St. George killing a Serpend.. Can someone give me a better picture on the observe pictures of the Kopeeka and Roubl of Modern russia. Basilio
Hi all, I'm just starting to collect coins from Russia, And I'm intersted in coins from 1992 until 2008. I've been informed that it is hard to collect russian coins these days. Should I start with my collection. I'm also intersted in Russian coins from 1921 to 1991 is it Hard to fin them? Hallo! There is no problem to collect a full set of each year / each nominal of 1992-2008 except for some combination year/mint mark, and mint errors in wrong metals. Some pieces can be found in mint sets only. And a Rouble's nominals of 2001 and 2003 - are very rare, and expensive. Period 1921-1991 also have some "hard" points - like 2 kopeks 1927 or 1925 or 5 Kopeks 1933 or 1958 But about 90% of coins can be found for collection for a few months... alexbq2
Can anyone tell me what is the origin of the observe picture in Modern Kopeeks and Moder Roubls.I know it is something to do with St. George killing a Serpend.. Can someone give me a better picture on the observe pictures of the Kopeeka and Roubl of Modern russia. The St. George was the saint traditionally depicted on the earliest coins of the russian kingdom unified under the Moscow's rule (I believe he is on the crest of Moscow even to this day) , or at least it was some guy who looked a lot like him. The name of the smaller denomination the "kopeck" comes from the Russian word that means the spear. This is because the lower denomination "denga", no longer in issue, depicted a rider with a sword instead of a spear. If you look at the copper coinage from 1757 to 1796 you will see a lot of Saint Georges. The modern ruble has a two headed eagle on the reverse. This is a traditional symbol of the Russian kingdom and then empire. One head use to be the symbol of monarchy, the other of the orthodox patriarchy (church). The current modification of the eagle (no crowns, empty talons) was first used for a short period by the provisional government after Nicholas the second abdicated (1917). The modern Russia, had to get rid of the communist symbols of USSR on its money, so they picked something traditional. Although, as I recall, earlier issues had some view of the Kremlin on them. By the way, most coins even dating back to 1700 and 1800 are still very accessible, at least for now.

gxseries
tqc2002 - if you checked my page here http://www.gxseries.com/numis/rus_new_type/1992_2007.htm, trust me, it can be more difficult than you imagined. The only thing that's easy are the commemorative 2 and 10 ruble coins. As for the price, here is a good indication: http://www.arcamax.ru/price_reg92.htm 1USD is about 25 rubles - I'm sure you can do the maths. Anything with R just means RARE. HOM means face value. Thanks TQ Full set of coins for circulation 1992-2007 (without rarities and mint sets-only spec) cost about 100 Euros in VF-XF conditions. 50 kop, 1 and 2 Rouble's dated 2001 only few pieces known - and wasn't offered for sale at all.. coins dated 2003 cost from 150 USD - for 5 Rouble piece till 800 dollars for 1 Rub. That coins was issued only 15,000 pcs for mint-sets, but no mintsets was made (unfortunately) and some pieces (hundred 's) was putted in circulation... and obtained there
tqc2002
Thank you all, I'm confused! should I or shouldn't I start collecting Russian Coins? if Not - What can you suggest to collect? I want to collect Russian coins - But the prices are very high! is it for all coins? I'm enclosing two coins - can you tell me how much they'll cost? 1922 and 1924 coins Thanks in advanced
Tane
I'm confused! should I or shouldn't I start collecting Russian Coins?if Not - What can you suggest to collect? I want to collect Russian coins - But the prices are very high! is it for all coins? If you want to collect Russian coins, then collect them! There are still hundreds of coins which can be purchased for only a few cents each. For example I recently purchased a lot of 50 currently circulating Russian coins for only 1 euro! There were several XF-UNC coins in the lot. Besides the new ones, many of the older soviet and imperial coins are quite reasonably priced too. alexbq2
I'm confused! should I or shouldn't I start collecting Russian Coins? I'm enclosing two coins - can you tell me how much they'll cost? 1922 and 1924 coins Thanks in advanced It is rather simple, you are talking to a group of very advanced collectors and dealers who work with coins that are sometimes unique and often very expensive. It looks to me like your intent is to start a moderate hobby. So unless you develop an appetite for rare coins you'll be fine. Your coins are worth about 5-10 dollars US, unless they are some special die variety, in which case 100-1000 US. Starting a small collection of Russian coins of the 20th century is easy, if you stay away from the rare stuff. General circulation coins of USSR not mint condition can be bought for pennies. Mint sets for many years can be bought for under 40$. Coins that circulated between 1917 and 1930's will mostly be a few dollars a piece. Most coins from 1900 to 1916 are in VF and XF conditions and will generally run between 5-15 US. Copper coinage of 1730’s and 1740’s is mostly cheap, also under 15 US. Silver kopeks of 17th century are mostly 5-10 US. So there is a lot of circulated material that con be bought cheaply. I recommend you get some Konross publications, they are not terribly detailed but a good quick reference, and not expensive.
tqc2002
Thank you all for helping me! Thank you very much. I understand that it is hard to collect russian coins - by mintmarks, Am I right? I do want to collect by Mintmarks - MMD SPMD etc.. - wich is HARDER to collect or maybe it varies? Where can I buy coins from Russia? I'm from Israel, Can some one help me? ------- Now For the Coins: You have said that they are 5$ to 10$ is it for both or each? can you be more specific please? I'm enclosing the Coins again with another old coin Can you help me - the coins are not mine and I want to buy them - both of us ,me and the one that want to sell them, does not realy know how much they costs - so I want to know how much should I pay for each coin aprox. How can I calc. the cost of a coin from a cat? is it 75% or 50% or maybe 100% value? Please help me with these 3 coins and also guide me on how to calc the aprox. value of a coin from a catalog - lets say a Konor cat (I'm planning on buying one soon ). alexbq2
The last coin looks much more interesting. It looks nice enough to generate some excitement on eBay, which is where I shop. These days I would estimate its value at something like 80 US, but I'm often wrong in these matters:) The previous coins could be rare, but I would need to know the inscription on the edge. Chances are they're not in which case taking another look at them I would say the 1924 poltinnik could be closer to 10, and the 1922 around 15, it looks nicer than I thought it was. Collecting Russian coins by mintmarks is not difficult, provided you have a budget comparable to that of Albanian GDP:) Like I said earlier, if you are not willing to commit much money to the cause it is doable but with limitations. If cost is no issue to you, this collecting is really easy. At any rate watch out I spent over 1000 US on coins last month.
gxseries
Alex, I really disagree. Perhaps you are living in Russia which makes it extremely easy to import and even find these coins in Russia but remember that we outside of Russia cannot even export any coins older than 1957. Once they get in, we'll never see the lights of them ever again unless someone illegally exports them out. Again, it depends on how satisified you are with the matter of "completeness". If you can't live with holes because of extreme rarities, then change something that seems easier.
tqc2002
Thank you all for the replies. I'm thinking on collecting Russian coins ... But since there might be some dificulties collecting coins from the early years... I'm still not sure on starting the collection, even though I have almost 50 diferent regular circulation coins of Russia. Is there a way to collect coins from Russia early years outside of Russia? I know that it is true that it is difficult to get coins out side of russia - My wife Julia is Russian, hans why I want to collect Russian coins, and she once told me that it is very hard to get coins outside of Russia. Can any body Help me, I'm willing to send money in exchange of the coins - If that possible. as I said before I'm from Israel - and I'm not interested only in Mint condition also AU XF and F are good for me. Thanks for any kind of help, TQ
alexbq2
Hi Gxseries, I'm not following in which way you disagree? As far as I understood our new friend wants to start a new collection of 20th century coins, so at least half of those are 1957 and above. The coins from prior years of soviet rule are mostly common unless you are interested in rare die variations. Obviously 1958 patterns would be somewhat difficult to find. I just saw one on eBay for 11000 US. You are clearly a more serious collector than I am. I can tell by looking at your avatar:) In my collecting, I've never set out to get all coin varieties ever minted. I enjoy the hunt, so I'm happy when I get something I like, and on a budget:) So I can leave with holes just fine. BTW, Israel has a huge Russian community, and many of them should have some Russian coins on hand, and of course there is eBay I think something like 1200 Russian coins go through it every week. Plenty to start a collection:)

How much a set of coins like that should cost? at both mintage, also an avargae cost for a set from 1997 untill 2006 would be great.
