tabbs
Yes, very nice piece - better design than the later (1903-14) 1 Rupie coin. The "rare" year in that series is 1894, with only 48,200 pieces made. But if you don't collect them by year, it is IMO better to have, like you, a well preserved piece from a relatively common year than a worn one from a rare year ... Goetzdude
Goetz may have used this Obverse design to assist him in creating the 1914 medaillic issue below. Although not exact, they are quite similar.
tabbs
According to the Jaeger, the emperor is depicted in the Garde du Corps uniform, "nach einem von Prof. Lenbach gezeichneten Profil-Medaillon". So the obverse designer of the East Africa coin, Emil Weigand, used a medallion drawn by Franz von Lenbach - and that drawing is probably what Goetz used too. Originally the Rupie coins were supposed to have the same "Wilhelm II. Deutscher Kaiser" inscription. But Wilhelm was against it, as the helmet eagle (which goes almost to the edge) would have split name and title into two parts of very different length. So he suggested to use this Latin(ized) version which resulted in two almost equally long parts ... Christian
