TreasureGirl
Does anyone know what the Mint is going to do after the State quarters program ends in 2009? I'd like to see a revival of Liberty-based coins, actually... My idea for fostering collector interest in 2009 and after: - Give the quarter a reproduction of the Flowing Hair/Liberty Cap design - Give the half a reproduction of the Draped Bust design - Give the dime a reproduction of the Capped Bust design - Give the cent a reproduction of the Braided Hair design - Give the nickel a reproduction of the 3 Cent Nickel Liberty (always liked her, not that the Mint is going to change from the new Jefferson design soon...) - THROW OUT all the Native American and President designs and bring back the St. Gaudens design!!! Or, if the Mint is really, REALLY itching for a series of some kind (>.<), bring back the popularity of the half dollar by releasing BRAND NEW designs of Liberty on them. Or, just release the half with a series of redesigns of the above and just make new Liberty designs for the rest of U.S. coinage... Any other ideas? thedeadpoint
Wow... quite a high bar you set for them. I love the ideas but its sad it will never happen. You've got the support and pressure of groups that support certain presidents working to keep their favorite president on a coin. Then you realize by taking past presidents off of our circulating coinage, most people in America probably wouldn't know of ANY past presidents. I am surprised and disappointed I didn't see many of the late 19th century designs on your list - no Barber head, no V nick, no seated liberty. How 'bout some of those great patterns from the 1880s??? Some of those are gorgeous! ALL of those options are immensely better than the capped bust in my opinion. Also, I realized that I can't remember which design is which between the capped bust and draped bust... I had to look them up.
TreasureGirl
To be honest, I'd like to see a revival of ANY of the old Liberty designs. I had just figured the older ones might catch more attention at first. And, when it comes to teaching America about presidents via coinage... isn't that what the PD program is for? And what about banknotes? Even so, I found an Ike dime on eBay a while back If I could pick any group of spending money to keep in my pocket on any given day, they would NOT include any specific person (presidents, SBA, Sac, Franklin...). The concept of Liberty gives designers so much free and artistic will in their sculptures. None of this "based on a portrait by so-and-so" crap. We already have the portrait, we already have the statue in so-and-so park... granted, we have the Statue of Liberty, but that is just one take on her. She can be anyone the designers want her to be, when you can only make Jefferson look so much different than Jefferson. Which is why Liberty and her image are so fascinating to me. Look at St. Gaudens' vs. Barber's designs.
Scottishmoney
I would not mind going back to the SL Quarters, WL halves, Mercury Dimes, Buffalo nickels and Indian cents myself. But it will never happen, because we have to have our politician gawd figures on our coins now. So we worship them instead of idealised Liberty etc.

I'd rather see the Liberty V nickel instead. but if they can incuse the date on the Buffalo, then I may be persuaded. I just think it's time for a change. (sorry, no pun intended) The newest design (with the exception of the newest nickel, which I don't count), is the half dollar in 1964. The dime is from 1946, the nickel is slightly redesigned, but still Jefferson/Monticello from 1938, the Quarter from 1932, and the cent from 1909 (1959 if you count the change on the reverse.) The designs are old and making commemorative series isn't the answer.

Scottishmoney
Well let me weigh in on Canadian coins, where they are getting a bit long in the tooth on the non monarch side of things too. The majority of them date from 1937 when the new GVI coins came out. Yes, the 1967 commems were cool, and I got one of the 5¢ in AU in change last Friday, but they were the exception to the change rule.
numismatic nut
I hear about plans to honor places like D.C.,and the islands in the gulf we have.
Drusus
I wouldnt mind paying tribute to past coins but I dont want our coins to just go back to how they were (unless they are going to make silver dimes and quarters again!!), thats boring. I like the pres dollar idea...They look pretty good after a bit of toning. I have a set of shell oil pres tokens...so now I will have 2 sets of presidents... Then again I like to study the history of American presidents, a motley bunch. I, of course, do not worship them, nor do I think most people...its history. I do think that the word or concept of liberty should always be on our coins though...in god we trust? another matter when you talk about worshiping... I LOVE the indian coins (save the current dollar design)...I would love to see a rebirth (tribute), to the classic indian head 1 cent...and a more classic design to the sac...I would like to see the pres dollars in side portrait...what else.....thats good for now. Talk about a tired design concept for coins...Sitting libery, standing liberty, walking liberty, liberty head, etc..etc... Unlike the indian and the buffalo or our own historical figures and places...unique american...these liberty coins are just borrowed from the french who borrowed the idea from the roman libertas.....I can see going back to this as tribute or in one denomination but not just reverting back... I've got to agree again, although the quarters are getting pretty regular with their commemoratives in 1992, 1999, 2000 and pretty much every year since 1992 has had at least one (usually more) type of commemorative design. Don't forget the 2005 V nickel commemorating the 60th anniversary of D-Day. But in general, the same reverse design has been around since George VI's reign. I wouldn't mind a change when the monarch finally changes. The problem is, they all contain national symbols (Loon, Beaver, Caribou, Maple Leaf) and would result in some backlash from the public. Hopefully it will be a very long time, ie 20 years or so before the monarch changes. I hope QEII lives as long as the Queen Mum, 101 1/2 years. Then Princess Charles will be an old girl when she ascends the throne and will be a caretaker monarch. I like the reverse sides of the Canadian coins, actually the 50¢ coin did change the reverse once, but those are never seen in circulation. Dockwalliper
I think the president dollars series should signal the end of presidents on our coins. Each man gets his day(coin) and thats it. I'm not in favor of recycling old designs but would love to see totally new designs based on traditional American themes. A nation wide contest for designs would be wonderful.
