akdrv
KOLKATA: Customs officials at Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport confiscated 443 silver coins on Monday night from a passenger who arrived from Myanmar. Ramesh Kumar (31), a resident of Rajasthan, arrived on an Alliance Air flight and cleared the immigration section. But Customs officials stopped him after the X-ray machine showed he was carrying silver coins in his bag. Kumar did not have a non-antiquity-certificate for carrying the coins. http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/Silver_...how/2247396.cms
TreasureGirl
So, if I fly two states over, buy a little silver at the local flea market, and try to bring it home with me, does that mean I need an non-antiquity certificate?
Dockwalliper
If you have a layover in the KOLKATA airport you do.
WranglerOldDan
TreasureGirl, only if the coins in question happened to be on the list of coins that are prohibited from entering the country. By your being able to buy them at a local flea market would lead me to believe this would be highly unlikely. You just don't normally get these at such an outlet. willieboyd2
Kolkata is Calcutta, India. "He was detained after preliminary interrogation by Customs officials who suspect the coins are more than 100 years old and have great antique value" So a US Morgan dollar is illegal in India?
