Goetz Opus 455

Recommended Posts

Here is another nice medal of Karl Goetz. It has been issued on the closing of the mines in the Harz mountains in 1930. The mines have been in operation for more than 400 years. They produced Gold, Silver, Copper, Lead, Tin and Zinc. The Harz mountains are south of Hanover and well known in Germany for their highest mountain the Brocken (altitude 1142 meter).

The coins of the Harz montains are very famous and they were struck for the Dukeships of Braunschweig-Lueneburg and Braunschweig-Wolfenbuettel. One important symbol of these coins is the wild man, which is shown on the front side of the Goetz medal.

On the back side on can see the Kaiser Wilhelm Schacht (Empereur Wilhelm Mine) on the left side of the miner.

The Kaiser Wilhelm Schacht exists still today and was used by the Technical University in Clausthal for demonstration porpuses.
