Damiano
This medal (27 mm.) is a gift by a friend. He told me that it belonged to his great-grandmother who died about in 1930. Surely it is a common wearing medal, but I should like to know an approximate date. Is it possible to assume a date between the end of XIX century and the beginning of XX, examining the making and the style? Thank you
exonumia
Without finding it in a book on Napoeleon medals, these undated/unmarked medals are quite difficult to date. Based on the style, I'd say ca. 1910-1930.
elverno
Unfortunately without an engraver it's pretty tough to date these things. I'd have to bow to Rich's expertise on this one...
constanius
Looking at the wear to the high points, if it was only used as jewelry and not put in a pocket, it could be quite old. The body of the Emperor Napoleon was placed in his tomb on April 2nd 1861, perhaps this medal could even date from then. It is a nice portrait and the wear makes Napoleon look a tragic but resolute figure. A very attractive piece whatever it's age. Have you seen this Mystery of Napoleon's Death-Mask ?
