Here's a section that will interest the Portuguese members here.My boss, who is a coin dealer has loaned me a green 20 Centavos & a black 30 Centavos to get identified,as he couldn't find them listed in any banknote catalogue.

The fronts of these notes have a building in the centre with the inscription,'HOSPITAL DE S.JOSE' & 'ARCOS DE VALDEVEZ' in 2 lines above. The Portuguese royal Coat-of-Arms is present (even though these notes have certainly been issued much later than 1910!).Below the building is a signature with 'O Provedor' above it.The 'VALE (20 or 30) CENTAVOS' is in the bottom left hand corner.

The backs of these notes have a female figure with 2 child-like fugures. The 'VALE (20 or 30) CENTAVOS' in a circle is at the top right-hand corner.Below the figures is the inscription,'SE ES AMIGO DO BEM INUTILISA ESTA CEDULA' in a rectangular box.

Both sides of the notes have a circular patterned border.

If you know something about these notes,& can translate the inscriptions into English for me,please let me know.

Dave, thanks for that.It sounds like my boss will have to buy a specialised catalogue of Portuguese banknotes, that is,if there is one in English.

These are emergency banknotes issued in the early 20's by the S. Jose Hospital in Arcos de Valdevez, the 20 and 30 centavos are Almeida catalog #251 and #252.

Vale - Worth/Value.

O provedor - A financial administrator for nonprofit organizations (it has some other diferent meanings nowadays).

"SE ES AMIGO DO BEM INUTILISA ESTA CEDULA" - If you are a friend of the "good" destroy this note.*

* - These notes were given as change and the phrase above was a invitation to give a "donation" by destroying it (therefore the note wouldn't be used again).

Valuewise: a UNC set of those (5 notes: 5,10,20,30 and 50 centavos) is usually sold between 10 and 15 Euro.

There are a lot of different portuguese emergency banknotes. The more common are the ones from the local goverment (type villages and city counsels), but even big and small companies such as cafés tram companies, milkcentrals etc. emitted emergency banknotes. There are probably more than a thousand different types including the ones from Madeira island, Acores Islands, Mocambique, Angola etc...

The one you describe are probably the most common to find, and for many the first contact to portuguese emergency banknotes.

Where can you buy the Almeida catalogue from? My boss could do with one for cataloging Portuguese coins & banknotes, just to compare the Portuguese Euro prices to the US$ prices in both Krause & Pick.

The Almeida catalog is only for Portuguese and colonial emergency money, printed only in 1982, its bilingual (Portuguese/English) but it doesn't state any values just C,E,R,RR (Common, Scarce, Rare, Very Rare).

The coin catalog from Pre-Roman times to the Euro is the Gomes (last edition 2006/7) published by the Portuguese Numismatic Association every 3/5 years (with prices), for baknotes it's usually used the Ferreira da Silva yearbook with all the coin/banknote values since 1800, there is another yearbook but this one is better for the less experienced collector (more pictures) altough just a bit more expensive.

The Almeida is hard to find, the Gomes is a bit expensive (and s/h abroad is also pricy), but you can get the yearbook easily on Ebay or: Link.
