Netherlands 2007: Michiel de Ruyter - and more

Recommended Posts

The KNM (Royal Dutch Mint) will soon issue a €5 silver coin commemorating Michiel de Ruyter. He was born 400 years ago, in March 1607, and was a famous Dutch admiral.

The design of that coin is not known yet, but the piece is already listed at the KNM website. There will be a "circulation" version of the silver coin which can be had at face value. (Other issues will be a silver €5 proof coin and a gold €10 proof coin, I suppose, but those will be more expensive.)

Also there seem to be plans to issue a commem dedicated to the "Afsluitdijk". That dam separates the North Sea (salt water) from the Ijsselmeer (now inland waters, partly polders) and connects Friesland and North Holland. The last gate in the dam was closed in May 1932, thus 75 years ago. http://www.rijkswaterstaat.nl/wateroverzic...ender/index.jsp

Not sure whether that will actually be a coin; the Dutch mint also makes quite a few commemorative medals. We will see. :ninja:

(Edit: It's official now - there are no plans to issue an "Afsluitdijk" coin.)

She also pushes him to ship those Belastingdienst-fivers, which he still has piled up here... :ninja:

Tell her not to be so pushy. ;) Just wait until this de Ruyter coin is issued, so those who are interested in both pieces (such as tabbs) can then get both ...

Well well well.

The way the motto "Onze parel - hun schrik" is put on the coin is interesting. But I cannot really say I like it ... neither the motto nor the design. We will see what the actual coin looks like.

The "Michiel de Ruyter" coin has been / will be issued.

Has been, because the pieces were apparently part of the De Ruyter Year opening ceremony in his birthplace Vlissingen yesterday. Will be, because the Vijfje can be had at Dutch post offices as from Monday.

(sotto voce) Eeeeriiik ... :ninja:

Here are some images of the proof version. I am still underwhelmed :ninja: the Dutch mint has produced much nicer coins before. But it's not as bad as I first thought.

Hey trantor 3 just how many new Presidential dollars would I have to send over to get a couple of those? Every time I check in here somebody has something new that is NOT available in Indiana!!! Hope someone still has a few extras and needs something from the states or, if nothing else, there is always PayPal!

That shipment from the Mint will arrive on monday, the postman could not deliver todat to me because I wasn't at home and I have to sign for reception.

No problemo. :ninja: So the post office had the vijfje but not the ToR commem?

Seems that was it - according to the latest info at http://www.knm.nl the Dutch Mint will not issue any further collector coins this year. Note that the headline "Geen tweede herdenkingsmunt in 2007" is a little misleading; apparently they use the term herdenkingsmunt (which I thought means commemorative coin) for the collector coins but not for the commemorative coins. Anyway, no more "special" coins from the Netherlands between now and at least New Year's Day ...
