Reference: Coin and Medal Alignment

Recommended Posts

You will sometimes come across the terms "Coin alignment" or "Medal alignment". Sometimes the words "orientation" or "rotation" are used instead of "alignment" The terms refer to the relative positioning of the object's obverse and reverse.

Here is how the orientations are differentiated: Hold the coin or medal such that you are viewing the obverse normally (right side up, so to speak) and flip the coin over top-to-bottom. If you can now see the reverse normally, it's coin alignment, if the reverse is rotated 180 degrees, it's medal orientation.

These two standards are a lot easier to communicate in pictures than with words.
