I had a bit of fun buying some Bearer Cheques from Zimbabwe.They are as follows;

Denomination; Issue Date; Expiry Date;

$5,000 1st December 2003 31st December 2005

$10,000 1st December 2003 31st December 2005

$50,000 1st February 2006 31st December 2006

$100,000 1st June 2006 31st December 2006

(Note; The $50,000 (purple) & $100,000 (green) both depict Victoria Falls on the back.)

I also bought a Jersey 6d. banknote,which was issued on the island in 1942.

I have got a Quebec 1935 $5 banknote that is coming on its way.It was issued by the Bank of Montreal.I was the successful bidder in an auction over here in New Zealand that closed on Tuesday,as I am buying this note for NZ$60! I'm not sure what prices are listed for it in either Pick Specialised or in Charlton.There are not many collectors of Canadian banknotes,especially the chartered bank notes,over here.

It is a very nice note.It was graded as Fine.My boss turned up at my place,so I showed him.He graded it as V.F.

Thanks guys! The $10 was an upgrade for the one I have that's taped. The $5 I needed for type as well as the $1. That one has a nice reverse, but the one I really want is the 1918 $2, but even if I found one today I probably wouldn't have had enough money for it! That one has a battleship on the back, one of the coolest designs for large size notes in my opinion.

In fact, thanks for posting those. Its nice to see what is out there before I hit the bourse floor. You've really got me thinking.

Well, I decided to be nosey and looked in my Blackbook on US currency. Judging by the picks, those notes do not run cheap. I'd probably walk out with nothing else but those 3 with the budget I have. I guess I'll have to make a cheaper list of "notes to check out"....

Hi all!

I just got back from a lovely trip to Mexico. While there, I tried to get som e Mexican banknotes. I did not have a lot of time to search for many places, as I was hiking through forests and crossing waist high rivers in the Sierra Madre Mountains, hiking up to the worlds 2nd highest (and I believe the steepest!) lighthouse, and taking tours through cities.

While I found it very easy to get banknotes, I found it impossible to get banknotes that were less than, well... filthy. I tried getting them from vendors, but they were the worst. I tried from a couple Money Exchanges, but they all turned out to be ladies who had to dig through their purses and through bags of crumpled banknotes to get me stuff that I promptly refused. I finally went to a bank in Mazatlan. I figured that they would be the best place to get what I needed. If this was true, I am sorry to say that they were not very good. They weren't as crumpled or as dirty as the others I saw, but they weren't that great either. I would up with only two denominations as the others looked so bad. Here they are - Keep in mind, these are the best I could get in three cities!

Even though I will have to obtain better pieces, I am glad that I had the experience of trying to get them in Mexico. One person I talked to said that they were going to be getting new notes fairly soon and that is likely why they are hard to obtain as the banks are confiscating some of the notes. This explained why they wanted to give me a lot of coins as well as banknotes. As I was looking through some coins in my hand on the street, I was approached by beggars asking for money. It's best not to show even a few pesos in your hand in the cities.

But there was some good news. When I returned home, I found this note from Tunisia waiting for me. Not too rare, but rarely seen - 1 Dinar from 1965.

The reverse of the $5 is just a very intricate design. The text on the right side tells basically that it is legal tender, and also the prison terms for counterfeiting. Deadpoint, I wouldn't be too discouraged, after all Baltimore will likely be a huge show compared to my local 15-dealer show, so you might have much better luck finding nice notes at good prices. The $1 series 1918 and the 1907 woodchopper are more expensive notes, so you may want to look at the series 1914 Federal Reserve notes as they are really plentiful and inexpensive.

Dave, I love the reverse of the 20-peso! I haven't been to Mexico since 1992, but when I was down then in Cancun, it seemed like the Banco de Mexico was printing pesos faster than anyone could spend them (hmm... maybe that's what led to the currency crisis in 1994?). I saved a 2,000, a 5,000 and 10,000 peso notes from that trip, all crisp unc that I got from a bank I think when exchanging dollars.
