Date of Independence; Gained independence under the terms of a treaty signed on the 6th of December 1921,by which a Provisional Government came to power until the Irish Free State came into being in April 1922.The Irish Free State was a Dominion until 1937,when Ireland adopted a new constitutional arrangement in which the Governor-General of the Irish Free State was replaced by a President of Eire.King George VI of Great Britain remained head of state until the establishment of the Republic of Ireland in April 1949.The Republic of Ireland was declared by which Ireland seceded from the British Commonwealth.
