  1. Last night I found a 1918 wheatie in one of the cash tills. It's around a ~G-4 or so, not superb or anything, I had shown it to a friend, who then produced from his pocket a find from earlier in the day, a 1919 wheatie in ~Vg-8 condition. I just found it amusing that we found two very old and sequential wheaties from two different tills throughout the day.

  2. My wife is actually a teller and she recently had a lady come up and give her 2 Ikes to exchange for $2 because they got spit out when the Coinstar-type machine didn't recognize them. It seems that they're surfacing more often now?

The trends for old and unusual coins and currencies go like this. Holiday time (mainly Christmas) people spend the money they had "put away" for a long time. Second one is when the stock-market tanks. People get afraid and start spending money that was stuck away for a very long time. I've been working in retail for a long time and have a friend that used to be a bank teller, it really does happen this way. I've found more silver and older coins and notes in general in the last two years than in the previous eight and each holiday brings in lots of interesting goodies.

  3. Awesome coins ... but what do we do when we get to 1582? :ninja:

(That is when the Gregorian calendar was initiated, BTW).

For the most part we only have a few decades left before we run out of sequentially numbered coins...and as for the Gregorian calender, we will only be off by a few days each year won't we? I don't recall the predecessor being that different.

  4. Got two really nice Jeffersons in the mail today.

I love the look of the newer proof Jeffersons, but I really prefer the modeling of the hair on the older ones. The "extra" hair in the newer designs is just too much for such a small coin. I prefer to see complexity based on size not on concept when it comes to coins.

Back into collecting again DF? What happened with selling?

  6. I've come across a few errors similar to the one pictured. Although they are not common, they are not very rare either.

Also I am not familiar with their lettering styles or verbage but the top coin has a different character on the obverse second down from the plant-like shape. Is that just part of the date or could it be something else? I'm just asking because these are known to be counterfeited as well.

  7. I've been seeing a lot of the Puerto Rico Quarters, but the pennies and D.C. quarter seem more elusive here in Indiana

I wouldn't worry about the DC quarters, they are ugly as sin. However, I would hold onto the Puerto Rico quarters if you collect the newer junk, they have a pretty low mintage as territory quarters go.

  8. Found four Ukrainian coins in the Boryspil airport this morning, also found a British penny, the first of the new type introduced in 2008 that I have seen, curiously a 1964 US cent, and a Russian 50 Kopek dated 2009 on the floor from just walking around waiting for someone to arrive.

Seven coins in a couple of hours. Not bad.

You know...I think you've found more change on the ground there, than I've ever found here in the States. :ninja:
