  1. Wow, nice 54s. Wonder how that set got put together. Some BoC official must've plucked them off the presses, you'd never assemble something that awesome from circulation or even from a bank. Either way, congrats on picking them up!!
  2. Great notes Baxuss. Nice to see another collector of vintage queens! The Mauritius portrait is by Pietro Annigoni. The Queen bought the portrait in 07 but I think it was originally painted for the Fishmongers guild. "I did not want to paint her as a film star; I saw her as a monarch, alone in the problems of her responsibility" he said. Maybe some think that's overly romantic or nostalgic but I think it makes for a great artistic vision. Plus I think it captures, perhaps unintentionally, the modern need for monarchy and other ceremonial/historic institutions to retain the pride and dignity of the "head of state" position thus denying it to other parts of the government--hopefully keeping them more humble, as it were. There's 2 varieties, one by TDLR and one by Bradbury Wilkinson. This is a great little guide for collectors of Queens, I've used it many times: http://www.pjsymes.com.au/QE2/default.htm Annigoni is portrait no. 9.
  3. My collection of Queens now has its crown jewel...
  4. Nice Norwegian note--I have an example but it's not in nearly as good shape. How much did that one cost you?
  5. There's a really good deal on one of those EACB notes I posted earlier. It's a 1954 note which makes it even rarer. http://cgi.ebay.com/East-African-Currency-Board-20-Shilling-note-1952-/350412848082?pt=UK_Coins_Banknotes_GL&hash=item51963bbbd2
  6. Bank of Communications has a lot of nice train-themed notes. They are ABNC printed though so who knows where else this image might've come up.
  7. From my post on the recent acquisitions thread: I have some other nice notes in this theme I'll post later. It's a side interest of mine
  8. There are a couple nice examples of the Reunion note on fleabay if anyone was after one.
  9. One could say that back in the 70s when that note was issued Singapore was still a developing country in some ways, and a lot of those countries like to put modernist imagery on their notes as an aspirational thing. Richer countries are more interested in depicting 'heritage' scenes which I guess is why you don't see much in the way of modern figures or technology on their notes, relatively speaking. Their current notes are mostly "common man" engravings on the back. The fronts are pretty bland, IMO. Although the current $10000 note has a nice reverse (wikipedia): Always thought it interesting that Singapore series often had 5k and 10k notes--not the kind of thing you just stick in your wallet. Anyone who's interested in these though, you can get them way below face as specimens for about 500 bucks.
  10. I picked up a Chinese 2000 dragon polymer commemorative note for about $30 as part of another transaction. I knew it was worth maybe $50 at the time but 4 years later now they are in the $300 range. Not sure whether to sell or hold it for further appreciation.
  11. 90 bucks... wow, that's a deal. Even if inflation adjusted. Did you have the chance to get more of them then?
  12. Yeah I love the shameless promotion of the national airline. If they'd done it in this day and age maybe they would've put the stewardesses on it! The Boeing appears to be a 747SP, no wingtip fins. Shame they went off and put the same guy's portrait on EVERY single note in their currency today. I find that kind of creepy unless the subject is female, or the portraits are mixed up a bit.
  13. Anyone have the Reunion 1000 Francs / 20 Noveaux Francs overprinted note? That'd be a nice score for anyone who collects portraits of women on banknotes. Some lucky guy on banknotebank has one, although apparently he couldn't be bothered to put up proper scans: http://www.banknotebank.com/viewnote/895994
  14. I have a side interest in depictions of industry/technology on notes and recently picked up this 1985 note from Singapore. Not a super rare one but sort of my splurge in that category!
  15. Interesting, I didn't know that at all! Thanks for the info. Wonder why they put that language on money meant to circulate in a different continent. I have the Rs.50 and Rs.5 from the 1967 Mauritius series (the ones with the Annigoni portrait of QEII). The fiver is one of the first notes I had in my collection.
  16. Thanks guys! Would anyone be interested in an ongoing thread with these sorts of scans? I need to scan my collection anyway (for record/insurance purposes, you know, just in case).
  17. New here, picked up this pair a month or so ago. The scan seems to muddy it up a bit maybe because I left them in the sleeves. Anyone else here collect QEII notes?
