  1. Yeah, the hole damage on the half doesn't detract too badly from the coin, and the rest of it's quite nice, I think. It's a gorgeous design -- I didn't know until I had it in hand that it has a lettered edge: "FIFTY CENTS OR HALF A DOLLAR" and I don't think it's unfair to grade it F to VF outside of the damage. 'Course, it can't actually have that grade because of the damage, but I'm happy with it.
  2. Have I really not posted anything here since the last state coin show? For shame, me. PCGS MS65 1972D Ike with really intense gold toning, for the registry set: 1828 Bust half, because I've always wanted one, and I don't mind the damage because the rest of the coin is better than I could've afforded otherwise: Haven't successfully imaged the rest of them yet. I think my camera needs a good cleaning, and I need a steadier hand.
  3. I always get mine at my local coin shop so I can't make any online recommendations. You can get a look at the sort of thing I'm talking about here -- please keep in mind that I'm only providing the link for the image, I haven't done business with this company so I can't speak to their pricing, delivery options, or the like, and I definitely recommend trying to find a local provider (online or physical store) or the shipping might be an issue.
  4. I use the plastic folder pages with cardboard flips for my world birthyear set; the flip doesn't need to be stapled or taped since the pocket will hold it closed. I haven't seen A4 sized pocket pages... but then I'm in North America where we don't use that size, so I'm afraid I don't know where to point you. But it is a very handy way to store your coins, since it allows you easy access and easy sorting.
  5. Oh, that Benton Harbor apple cutout is great!
  6. *sigh* The downhill tumble has started. I have the three Toledo tokens I know about -- the old Community Traction with a round cutout, the 'T' cutout, and the larger school token with an 'S'. Photos when I get around to 'em...
  7. And we're glad to have you! (checks -- good grief, I've missed my 10th anniversary, too!) Here's to inattention!
  8. Oh! I've seen some of Osborne's fantasy coins at Origins; they're quite nice, actually. They're still around, though they seem to have two websites, Osborne Mint and Osborne Coinage.
  9. Very nice! They're all such a similar style; was there essentially just one or two private mints making these things?
  10. Easy question for me. I don't own any gold. I should like to, though. I'd love an Indian head quarter- or half-eagle.
  11. I am going to have to crawl eBay for a used copy. I fear to think what a tome like that must run new.
  12. Hi and welcome! I'm a big fan of British predecimal issues. I generally don't use the uploader for images; I put my coins on Omnicoin--or if I need a larger image I upload to TinyPic--and link it. I'm sure there are those here who can speak to the local uploader, though!
  13. Neat! I didn't know Newark-Heath had that system, and I was just in Heath over the Fourth.
  14. I might. It's a new seller with no other items for sale and zero feedback... basically a troll, methinks. I bet a number of eBayers are watching it for exactly the reason you suggest, though -- it says it's gaining one watch an hour.
  15. I always approach my eBay purchases with care -- there are some things I will not buy on eBay, and some amounts over which I will not go. But I can't think of ever actually getting stiffed on a deal. I had an item from the UK come up missing last year, and my purchase was refunded promptly through the automated system. Strangely, it did turn up over a month and a half late, so I contacted the seller to re-pay for it (or un-refund it, or whatever it should be called).
  16. I don't even have words for this auction. In his favor, you can't say he's misrepresenting the piece...
  17. That would be awesome -- I've only rarely spotted them on the Bay of E, and the prices always had a significant premium over bullion, so I will set my expectations accordingly.
  18. Great stuff! (must... avoid... eBay... until... payday!)
  19. Okay, my first two tokens have arrived (I though I'd ordered the Toledo 'school' token, but I hadn't, it was the older Community Traction token with a simple hole... so I promptly ordered the 'school' token from another seller...). It's all downhill from here, isn't it? Looks like the difficult letters are the ones you'd expect -- at least on eBay, I haven't seen any Qs, Xs or Zs, but that hardly constitutes an exhaustive search. There's one with a good + that could pass for an x if it's rotated 45°... is it too soon to start cheating?
  20. I know there is at least one Grateful Dead themed round I've been wanting to get my hands on...
  21. I don't collect for the rich. I collect for the 'ooo, neat'. I also have already gone right out on eBay and purchased one regular Community Traction token, and one for use by students. The regular ones have a T for Toledo, the student ones an S for School (or Student). There's an older style, but I haven't seen one I liked yet. Total cost for both, about two bucks. I'm starting to think it might be neat to have a set of tokens with those letter forms -- I wonder if all 26 letters are represented?
  22. Man, now I want to dig through my stuff and see if I can find those old Community Traction ride tokens I know I used to have, from my home town.
  23. Okay, I like the Scrooge one. The state ones are kind of nice, too - I should see what's floating around at my LCS.
