  1. Okay this is not the coin I'm waiting on. Nemisis coins or the post office seems to be a little slow. From a local coin shop. (I can bring back if anyone spots a problem. ) Macedon, Alexander III, the Great, 336-323 BC, AR Tetradrachm Herakles head rt. in skin of Nemean lion/Zeus seated left, axe to right, Minted 245-215 BC? I am not sure on all the info on this one. It has what appears to be an axe on Zeus's right.
  2. Again not a coin. A button, age and origin to be wondered about. Really could not pass up for 99 cents. No bidders on it and only put $1.50 as max so I figured no loss. European Lativa seller had a bunch of metal detector finds. I have it soaking now in distilled water to get some of the crud off. Believe it or not the stone is green. This is a picture as received. He had it listed as yellow. It is a little bit cleaner now then the pictures show. Battery went dead and to lazy to pick up some tonite. Good clarity. One fracture through about 1/3 of the stone. and one internal flaw. Approximately 2 carats. I am going to bring it in to the gem and mineral society Saturday to see if they can ID the stone. So far green gem stones, down to Tourmaline, Chrysoberyl, Tsavorite, Sapphire, Demantoid, Emerald (AKA green beryl), Peridot, Tourmaline, or maybe one I missed. (Maybe glass but if it is, its still old.) Hopefully I'll get a coin I won Sunday, no one bid against me tomorrow. $4.00 including shipping. Not a big score but a nice one for the price. It made me think about collecting another series other then Morgan's.
  3. I'm wondering about using a date range myself. I.E. if its 1400 to 1414 we might need to pick a date. I don't think we are quite at that point yet but getting closer. On the different calenders I think we already decided earlier on as long as they convert. Even right now an Arabic or Indian coin could be used. I need to go back through the thread and see what we already figured out.
  4. Just wondering a few things. What is the earliest do we think we can get to? I have seen dated in the 1490's range. A few single year minted coins that could be counted. But it does seem to be it. Also what countries had early dates. Hungary, Lithuania, any others?
  5. I'm almost thought about getting it graded. But she will probably stay free.
  6. Well, my safety incentive gift card from work coin. Been wanting a nice Barber for awhile. 1915 D Barber Quarter. I have thought about getting one of the knight's for awhile. And since the "How far back" was stuck. Now I'm kind of getting in to the older dated coins.
  7. 1559 Lithuania Half Groshen A little bit late but it fills the gap.
  8. 1559 Poland Half Groshen Ah, Just found out, got to change this from Poland to Lithuania. I saw it and just thought Poland with out thinking. Well, its my first Lithuanian coin. Sigismund II August 1559 Lithuania half Groshen
  9. Not coins but a group of spoons. Got a 1893 Columbian coin, to match, just need a Pan Am. From left to right. 1901 Pan Am Electricity Building 1893 Columbian Manufacturer's and Liberal Arts Building 1893 Columbian Women's Building 1893 Columbian Horticulture Building Worlds Fair City 1937 Coronation King George VI & Queen Elizibeth Scarab/Egyptian motif spoon (Maybe from around the time Howard Carter found the tomb?)
  10. Nope, 1889 bad rim dings, 1882 obverse lower left rim ding and one of the 1887's scratched. But getting them below melt can't say much. The 1882 O was a surprise. If it did not have the wear it would probably be a monster. It has one of the strongest strike New Orleans I've seen. The rims are crisp and good detail at one time. The hair at the ear at one time looks like it had good definition. Thinking about it my nephew may get at least one of the 1887's also. Just need to double check with "dad" how he's doing in school.
  11. Just did a copy and paste from the doldrums post below. Figured it would be faster. Adding a little info after looking at them a little bit better. " Kind of dropped out of my my doldrums today. I have not stopped by a pawn shop for a long time. But what the hey. They had a small brown envelope with a small batch of coins. 6 morgans ( 2 - 1887 o's, 1889 o, 1900 o au, 1882 o, 1883 o (can't remember what coin book causes it but it has nice toning on the back with that stripe nice au) , 1 peace dollar 1925, dateless "s" nickel, 1908 nickel, 1964 d quarter, 1964 d dime, 1935, 1936, 1944 merc dimes, a few wheat cents, 1974 ike dollar, and last but not least 1898 o quarter in a solid g4. I was just interested in the 1883 o dollar with the toning and the 1898 o quarter, but he wanted to get rid of the whole package. I told him the wheat cents, buff, ike, and nickel he could just use as change, but he said he wanted to get rid of all of it. And make an offer. I told him $80 expecting to bargain some, but he took it! I just wonder what he got them for? Have not had time to really go through them yet other then checking for over dates on the 1887 o morgans and the 1944 dime. Nope nothing there. Over $100 silver content, for $80 not bad. bhyper.gif Pics later in new purchases." I forgot about the 2003 D cent. Guess he doesn't deal in coins very often. Just did a quick vam look through on the morgans nothing special. The 1883 O has a strong clash on top of the right wing but no letter transfer. The 1900 O has a crack through the date but no clash and crack does not match a vam 29a. I'll post some of them later in the week to omnicoin. Probably will just add morgans and 1898 quarter. The 1889 I had bad thoughts about. They have been having silver casting classes at Houston Gem and Mineralogical Society. But I'll save it. Maybe give it to my nephew.
  12. Got mine yesterday. Thank you very much for the coin and contest. Really great way of doing a contest.
  13. I very rarely see a keel boat. Followed by the peace pipe. BTW forgot to add captions for coins. Top one has a lamination along the crease on Jefferson's lapel. Next one gold toned inside mint package. Third a sms. Fourth struck through grease area in front of forehead, on to face, and coming off chin. Most of the Jefferson's I have are in mint or proof sets. And I only photographed a few of those. Just to hard to get pictures on them through the cellophane or plastic.
  14. Speaking of nickels anybody else keep keelboats and peace pipes when they find them?
  15. Okay, bulk silver at a premium price. But you know I had to get it. Grateful Dead "Steal your face" skull logo It has a little gold toning around the edge, number 83 of 5000
  16. I did not really appreciate the size difference until I saw that picture.
  17. Kind of like them. But then I like simple designs. BTW 4 more in change. When it rains it pours. These are brand new shiny though.
  18. That is a pretty good difference. I'm wondering if the mint there does coins for other countries? If so it could be a "foreign" planchet. If not a bad/thick planchet. I am not up on English coins so wait up till someone with more experience answers. I did see some other pence denominations struck on wrong or foreign planchet going for up to $225. Just no 1999 20 pence. As to checking with the mint I don't think they could help on value.
  19. A first for me. A 2010 d shield cent. Its actually been in circulation for awhile and dirty with spots.
  20. Okay, I have not got it on omni yet but here is the 1782 8 reale salvaged from the wreck of the Spanish Brigantine El Cazador I picked up in Grand Cayman. The ship set sail January 11, 1784 from Vera Cruz, Mexico going to New Orleans. It was carrying 450,000 silver pesos. It sunk with out a trace. The money was meant to redeem by King Carlos III Spanish paper money in Spanish owned Louisiana. Spain was facing a financial crisis at the time the ship sank and King Carlos IV of Spain was forced to sell Louisiana to the French in 1800. Three years later Emperor Napoleon sold Louisiana to the United States (~1,000,000 square miles) for fifteen million dollars, about 3 cents per acre. The sinking of the ship and it contents changed the face of the U.S. On August 2, 1993 Captain Jerry Murphy of the fishing vessel Mistake found the wreck. The coin is graded "1" which means it has problems. As most shipwreck effect coins do. At least its not a 2 or worse. The obverse is in pretty decent shape but the reverse is bad. Ship wreck effect coins bring a new meaning to harshly cleaned, but there is not much choice.
  21. I see you took my advice plenty of money to buy a little money. I know the feeling when you hear that drop. Luckily for me neither were "big" coins. A few questions did you have fun and see a lot of eye candy? Also what if anything are you going to do different to prep?
  22. Strange I could not see the pics until I replied and saw the links to copy and paste in another tab? Edit: Really strange after posting I could see the pics in both yours and mine. I wonder since it is already in my temp. files?
  23. For me I picked up the 3 Hungary Denars as a group. But even if we are past the date or not dated I think I may end up getting a few more. Maybe one per ruler. I have one each from King Maximilian II, King Rudolf II, and King Matthias II. Right now I have one left to post 1 DENAR 1569 King Maximilian II Madonna and child.
  24. Love the gold tone on the nickel. Something looks odd in the wreath bow in the 1897. The front loop looks straight on the right side? Almost like a die gouge. But the one they have listed does not look like it. Does the 1879 S have doubling on the 87? I think I see some on the 7. Edit: I looked at your full size on on your website. (Hope you don't mind.) What I thought I saw in the 1897 wreath thumbnail may just be the lighting.
