  1. I agree with you - it is truly a BEAUTIFUL coin and a terrible shame that it was, apparently, usurped by the SBA - but alas, not everyone shares our sense of asthetics *sigh*
  2. Have you seen, what has been referred to as, Gasparro's original intention for the small dollar coin? Link to pics of that design (and a nice site as well) Although I am not a big fan of the "retro" school of design, I think this would have been a nice coin and maybe, just maybe, would have paved the way... back The SBA and SAC are real nice...as commemoratives.
  3. Congrats to The_Cave_Troll for correctly identifying 17 out of the 20 coins from those *very* difficult pics. Very impressive. solution pics appear in the other thread

  5. 17 correct!!! Closes at midnight tonight (Eastern Time) - in about 10 minutes!
  6. This is always a problem for me - net grading. If it is naturally dark from age (so called "original surface"), I say you certainly lose eye appeal points, but far less than if it were cleaned. Hypothetically, an EF40 details becomes maybe a VF30-35 - something like that. If it were an EF40 details, but obviously cleaned, I go VF20. Personal preference, of course.
  7. 16 correct!! Closes at midnight tonight (Eastern Time)
  8. I have ordered from them and agree they are good. I have also had good results with -Brooklyn Gallery
  9. A new leader with 12 correct - nice!
  10. Rotten Rodney SOARS to the front leading all entrants (he is the only entrant so far) with a blistering 10 correct! (well, really 9, but I'm sure he can fix that). Closes tomorrow at midnight - anyone dare to challenge him?
  11. maybe? but there are no entries yet - and if nobody gets them all, then whomever is first with the most correct wins
  12. I think I see some doubling on this Jefferson - what do you think?
  13. Not saying it's not about profit, but if the cent contained more than one cent of copper it would not circulate for long - the aluminum cents might have made good sense
  14. All you have to do is identify the 20 coins from these pictures (in TWO posts). Prize for this contest will be an 1893 Columbian Exposition Half Dollar, courtesy of Ms T. Bunny (and the Brain Scramble contest that just ended). Each picture is of a coin (not a token or medal) made at a US mint. For each picture, identify the coin and include a reasonably accurate date or date range for positive ID (nothing tricky going on with that). First one to correctly identify all 20 coins wins. Let’s set a limit of 5 entries maximum per contestant. Contest closes at midnight, July 11, 2005. If nobody correctly identifies all 20 by that time, the first one to have correctly identified the most coins wins. Remember, there are 20 pictures - A through T, in two posts. Should be a piece-of-cake. Here are the second TEN, K-T K. L. M. N. O. P. Q. R. S. T. piece-of-cake

  16. That Texas Centennial is one wicked nice hunk of metal! Really splendid contours - gotta keep my eye out for one at a "comfortable" price.
  17. Die cracks are not that rare and unless they gain some kind of notoriety with a catchy name, they do not tend to carry much of a premium when this minor. But they are interesting. By the way, I found another one of these neckline cracks

  19. About 10 months ago I came accross this 1998 Kennedy half dollar with a thin die crack running along the neck line to the rim. This weekend, I had the chance to search a few rolls of halves and found a few items worth keeping. A nice 1990-D and 1999-D turned up and I needed both of them. Also retired a 1968-D 40% silver. Additionally, I found three more 1998-P halves with similar die cracks. Guess that was a stress point on the dies for that year...kinda interesting.

  21. Received in circulation - This is the before pic (oh, what a story it might tell) And this is after some mad electrolysis + dipping sessions...still ugly, and released back into the wild.
  22. The attached file is what I use to print out insert labels for 2X2 flips like these... Not sure if anyone needs this, but your welcome to it. Very low tech, just a simple Word file, but it comes in handy. FlipInsertLabels.doc
  23. Thanx for sharing. A beautiful collection of pieces (that I know nothing about). That first one..the York..WoW some *very* impressive detail on the architecture!
  24. Checking the Redbook...the issues overlapped (silver - 1851-1873, nickel - 1865-1889), but... check out the mintages... For silver, from 1865-1873, less than 56,000 total. For nickel, from 1865-1873, about 28 million total. So, yeh, they kept making some of the silvers, but I guess they figured out nobody could find them since they are so small
