  1. Look like some nice ones there, there is a guide book to Canadian tokens, pretty accessible. https://www.amazon.com/Guide-Canadian-Official-Whitman-Guidebook/dp/0794822517 https://www.amazon.com/Canadian-Colonial-Tokens-W-K-Cross/dp/0889683689 I use the 2nd one, good book.
  2. A lot of this stuff really does sell as bullion. Unless collectors are willing to buy it a lot higher (mostly they aren't) dealers will pretty much offer the gold value and nothing more. They have to be able to make something on it when they sell it. If you have particularly collectable coins you may get a bit more.
  3. The one looks like Faustina I or II, Roman.
  4. The first looks like a fantasy Roman, the SC below the exergue is not right for the style, what I can see of the legend looks bungled. The 2nd is a poor copy of a Justinian I Byzantine. I agree with the poster who suggested copies or fantasy pieces for tourists.
  5. Babylon was a pre-coinage empire. to me it looks like a cast fake, possibly a fantasy piece of Alexander the great and someone else, possibly one of his generals.
  6. It's greek to me, are there small figures around the head on the obverse? Can you make out what they are?
  7. http://omnicoin.invisionzone.com/uploads/gallery/album_509/gallery_5496_509_285420.jpg http://omnicoin.invisionzone.com/uploads/gallery/album_509/gallery_5496_509_29632.jpg I'm not having any luck today with the image button, here are the links, trying to attach it too. This is a 1500 Batzen from Salzburg, Austria. Ben
  8. I think it may be medieval Spanish, but that is as far as I can go with that. I don't have good references for that time and place, but I have a few similar coins attributed to Spain. Browse Medieval Spanish coins in MA-Shops and you may find one that looks like yours.
  9. I suggest you take a look at the VCoins shops, you may have some luck. That is a pretty low price range for the timeframe you want, but low grade bargain coins can be had for that. Later coins, of say, the Constantine era, could be had in decent quality for that price range.
  10. The 7 is a medieval form of a 5, confusing isn't it! Going to get worse as we go back. Actually it is going to be very difficult very soon! I'm still looking for a 1501, but I have a 1500 on hand. I know dated coins were struck in the 1400s, but there are no easy series like the Hungarian denars to carry us along. Many of the older ones are actually listed in a book I have on early dated coins with descriptions like "6 examples known, 4 in museums".
  11. I'm with ccg on this, that looks like a cast copy, could even be an old one, but not struck.
  12. I hope this works, this should be my 1503 Brandeburg Groschen Ben
  13. Dang, I just picked up a 1506 too! Well fear not on the 1503, that I have, so someone post 05 and 04! I've got 1500 covered too, then it starts to get hard!
  14. Last year my wife got me several very nice ones, that fit well into my collection. Of course I gave her links to the places to buy them.... and to the specific coins... otherwise, well, what Steve said!
  15. Coin shows, I'm lucky enough to have at least 1 a month I can get to. Online stores, some few, Vcoins or MAshops through my clubs, 2 have an auction at the meeting, an online club, Ancient Peddler holds a weekly chat room based live auction (look for them on facebook for details) from people who call me up and want to know if I buy coins... somehow my phone number is on the internet if you search for coin buyers in our area... I do buy them so it works out I sell them on ebay and ebid if they don't meet my needs....
  16. I've been away from the forum for a while, wow, way to go folks! I do have a 1503 if we get back that far. I've just added a couple coins to my 1500s date collection, I still have a few more to process. Hopefully I will get to them soon. If you want to take a look, this link should get you there. http://www.tantaluscoins.com/coins/grid257.php Ben
  17. I sell a few coins on ebay and had similar experiences last year. I've stopped shipping out of the US unless the buyer wants to pay $45 for fully trackable shipping. Ben
  18. It's quite possible it was found in ruins in Egypt, it may be a "Grand Tour" souveneer from the late 19th century. Interesting in a way. Crude copy though.
  19. I'd start by soaking them in distilled water, taking them out and brushing with an old toothbrush from time to time. When you have some of the crud off and are satified with the coins revieled, dry them by placing in an oven at 150 - 200 F for a half hour, then rub them with some renaissance wax. This will get any water out of them and keep them from soaking up more. There are plenty of ancient coin groups on the internet where you can learn more. Search for Ancient Peddler and check that group out. These may have been out of the ground for a long time, but they have the look of Balkan finds from the last decade. These are very commonly available.
  20. I've only got 4 coins in the 1520s so far, 3 are dates we have and the next I have is 1521. I did just pick up a 1591 today as I slowly work to complete my date set for the century. We are into the harder stuff now, it gets worse after 1500. There are some early dated coins in CNG 90 closing in May...Mostly in the 1400s.
  21. Well although I found some nice coins at the ANA show, I didn't find a 1525 I guess we keep waiting. I have bid on a couple but not won them so.... But it will come!
  22. We are still looking for 1525! I'm heading to the ANA show in Pittsburg later this week, will take a look around for one!
  23. There are arabic dated (islamic) coins. I can manage to sort the dates of Turkish ones with the help of a book but I can't manage most of them, and gothic dates on some medieval coins. I am pretty sure we can finish this century out but into the 1400s I don't know! Right at the moment I only have a few more years in hand - 1524, 21, 15, and 12. I have a few more on the way from Europe, but it's certainly getting challenging! One thing this thread has done has been to start me organizing a date set of the 16th century, fun! You can see it here if you are interested.
