Thank you! That is great advice for me... Josh
  2. Hello, I have these Japanese coins. I believe they are dated somewhere between 1940-1945. Can anyone shed some light on them for me? Thanks! Josh
  3. Awesome... Here's a quick question while we wait : I did a little research into the Ancient Puebloans of the southwest US when living in Arizona. Read some books, etc. Would have they had anything back then? We're talking 1000 CE timeframe. I know pottery was big, as well as shells and feathers from South America. I just don't know what other kinds of trading items they would have used for currency. But,,,, supposing we get back that far (which probably won't happen), at what point do we accept the fact that currency was not in coin form? Anyone with more info? Hope this gives everyone something to think about as we wait to see what old coins turn up next. Thanks! Josh
  4. Ok,,,, today is literally the first day of my coin collecting career. I'm trying to participate as much as possible here, and really having fun. I was digging through my handful of coins just to see what I was starting with,,, when I discover THIS!!! Yesserie! I own one single world copper! It might be from right across the Minnesotan border here,,, but I don't care. A 1993 Canadian Penny, in the palm of my hand right now! Whew,,,, I made the cut... Josh
  5. Something else I thought I would add : When I was a kid,,, my Grandmother gave my Dad a little box. She gave him one every birthday. Eventually I asked my Dad what exactly these were, to discover they were nothing but an annual U.S. Proof Set. Pretty cool. I followed my Dad to his closet where he carried the little box. He showed me where tucked in the back of his closet was a proof set from every year since he was born in 1947! He literally had taken each box and stacked it on the last one right in that spot since the house was built in 1972. This memory probably comes from about the late 80's to early 90's. My Dad also showed me his penny collection. He had the standard cardboard cutouts with a bunch of pennies from various years. Of course many were missing, but I always thought the steel pennies of his were especially neat. A couple years ago, my parents were going through some hard times. Dad's pension had shrunk, their social security hadn't kicked in yet, they were spending beyond their budget, and found themselves in a pinch. I can hardly believe it, but at one point, having a heart to heart with my Dad, he disclosed to me that he had sold his entire coin collection. I was shocked! I realize they weren't necessarily rare or valuable beyond standard proof set value,,, but this was a collection dating back to the 40's! I had to know. I asked Dad what he sold them for. He replied he had sold the lot of them to a collector for $700.00. I said no way. No way he was pinched for $700.00!!! Yes in fact,,, my own Dad, in his mid 60's was struggling, and sold his beloved collection... So,,, one of my goals here with my new hobby,,, is not just for my own pleasure, or the pleasure of the family activity,,, but also for Dad. Now that I'm an adult, and can afford to replace some of Dad's collection, I'm not even sure if he would care at this point. I'm sure however he would find great satisfaction in knowing I and the girls are starting to collect coins. Maybe I'll just find some nice condition 1947 coins and give to Dad. Now of course,,, he's worked it all out with a financial adviser, and finally begun to figure out his personal finances. I guess we all go through those moments in life. Here's to you Dad...
  6. So I'm digging around, looking for some coins. I know I had a handful of cool coins laying around somewhere. I find them along with a bag full of standard pocket change. I start looking through, when I find this coin. It appears to be Bolivian from what I can ascertain. Strange. I usually know roughly where all my non-standard change has come from (a friend who traveled here or there, etc.) Not sure where this thing came from, but I noticed it's the exact size of a standard US dime, or so it seems. Wondering if it was floating around being mistaken for a dime! Well at least the denomination is correct... Hey,,, for the first day of my coin collecting career,,,, I think I'm doing pretty good!!! Josh
  7. Exactly! I have to admit,,, I get caught on nostalgia. When my wife bought our kids a Wii, I even went and downloaded all my old games! ;D Josh
  8. Absolutely! I'm watching a Princess Di coin on eBay as we speak. Of course, the girls like the pink enamel, and think the Princess Di coin "isn't pretty". I figure if I endure long enough to get a little collection started for them, they'll start appreciating mainstream coins more. I can't deny them the "pretty" ones either though. Thanks for the heads up. I'll check into the Princess Grace coins too. Josh
  9. Hello, My daughters and I are starting our coin collection, and of course,,, they're obsessed with anything princess and/or pink. Although I'll be helping them collect legitimate coins, of course the first item on our list is a princess coin! I was able to find some online, but not many. Just wondering if anyone has information or a website where more area available. Here is all I found : http://www.kaboodle.com/reviews/gold-coin-series-sleeping-beauty-pin And yes,,, I'll probably be spending $12.95 x 2 for the girl's first two coins... Josh
  10. Hmmm. Guess I could have checked eBay. Just found this one, which is probably what I had in the early 90's as a kid. Think I'll buy it! http://www.ebay.com/itm/ARGENTINA-COIN-5-CENTAVOS-RADIANT-SUN-KM-109-1992-UNC-/280553776600?pt=US_World_Coins&hash=item41524ee5d8 Josh
  11. Hello. I had something like this when I was a kid. I had a little treasure chest with a bunch of stuff in it, including a handful of coins, and this was my favorite one. I have no idea where the coin ended up. I can't remember the date, but I'm sure it wasn't nearly this old. No idea what it is or what it was worth, but I'm very interested in getting one again, regardless of age or value. Anyone know more about these? I Googled "Argentinian Sun Coin" and found the photo below, which is roughly what I remember it looking like. Josh
  12. Ok, other then the fact that they're destroying these coins by cutting them, it is pretty impressive. I'm assuming they use a computer guided laser to do this. $19.99 at the cheapest seems pretty outrageous, but if you're talking about collecting coins,,, how can any collector not have one of these!!! I'll have to pick one up... http://www.ebay.com/itm/WORLDS-FINEST-Jigsaw-Puzzle-Coins-US-Dollar-Half-Quarter-Dime-Nickel-Penny-/190771670891?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&var=490122449493&hash=item2c6ae0af6b Josh

    eBay

I buy a lot on eBay. While I'm new to coin collecting, I imagine I'll be purchasing a lot there. Since I am new to coin collecting, my budget is very small. I'm interested in buying cheaper coins, and more of them. Of course there could be some counterfeits and such, but in my case, if the price is a couple dollars, even a counterfeit is welcome in my collection at this point. I figure I can start working on some of the easy and affordable basic coins that many collectors have. Generally if something is low cost, it really isn't worth counterfeiting in the first place. The next thing I like about eBay, is that I work out of town. I'm on 600-800 flights a year, 160 hotel rooms a year, and TONS of time sitting around in airports or other places where I'm bored out of my mind. eBay is just so EASY, and accessible anywhere I happen to be. There is access to items I certainly can't find elsewhere, and since I've never been to a coin show, so far eBay is the most impressive place I've seen! I just purchased a 1897 V Liberty Barber Nickle for $2.00 including shipping! No clue what it is. Don't care. It's old, it's cool, it's cheap, and now it's part of my new collection!
  14. Hello. My name is Josh, and I'm very happy to be here. Although I'm fairly new to coins & collecting, I have been into copper bullion for a few years, and also collect copper decorations. Living in Arizona, it was hard to ignor copper everywhere I looked. Now, back living in MN, I'm considering coin collecting for a few reasons. First of all, I have two young girls who are expressing interest in collecting. I figured coins would be an affordable, easy family activity to get involved with. I admire coins as well as the history behind them, and think this could be something which appeals to us all. I look forward to being a part of this online community, learning everything I can about coins, and building a family collection of our own. Josh
