  1. Ah, of course. +1 Saor Alba! That is an important fact. I should have said that I thought that they are the only 'Accepted' or 'Authorized' banknotes in NI. MauMauNotes brings up a great question, I think. I would think that in Ireland, these notes dominate, and like most places with their own currency, they are preferred for use when possible, even if the other notes are allowed by law or by custom. As I wondered about the crown dependencies, possesions, etc with their own curency, I went to Wikipedia and found a plethora of information. The section on everyday ise and acceptance perhaps best answers Mau Mau Notes' question. Link
  2. What a nice example, Saor Alba. These are easy to find in circulated, dirty condition, but as you say the UNC ones are a bit of a challenge. Congrats on getting this one - it's one of my favorites.
  3. As far as I know, it's the only currency that is legal tender in Northern Ireland. I have never heard that they could use other notes, such as Scottish or English banknotes on par with their own, though I'd suspect there is a bit of acceptance with tourism, etc. Interesting question though. I've heard that the English don't like the Guernsey or Isle of Man or Gibraltar notes to circulate, but I have no idea if those islands accept other notes.
  4. Good news then: you're still in the game! You'll need to consult this site every once in a while though! http://www.banknotenews.com/ Tajikistan, Mexico, Mauritania, Congo DR, Guatemala, Costa Rica, Hong Kong, etc. ... should keep you in the game somwhat, eh?
  5. Ah, I can see it clearly now! Thanks for the close up! Yes, Quite like the ancient works and those of Pliny the Elder when he wrote about the worlds Natural History... filled with scary things the farther away from the Mediterranean. I've seen some strange creatures on Portuguese notes when they had their Explorer Series - Quite something those notes! Thanks!
  6. Thanks Jtryka! MauMau - Nice notes there - As far as I know, that Algerian note is the only one that depicts Cave Art on it. And one can hardly go wrong with any Swiss note - The creature on front is fascinating... Any clue what it is? Werewolf? If so, I'd have to get it!
  7. I was pretty happy to get this in teh mail yesterday. It's my first Large Gold Certificate from 1922. It's also the first note I have (other than a fractional) that has someone different on the face. This one is Michael Hillegas, the first US Treasurer.
  8. Neat note, and an exquisite example of one of my favourite things about collecting banknotes – little known histories! I’ve not heard of the Riff Gov't before, but I’ve looked up some other references on this and it’s a great piece of history. And so, I go forth a little more knowledgeable. Thanks for posting!
  9. Wow - Nice! That's a cool note there! Congrats on getting this one
  10. nice notes MauMau! Good luck on that 5000 note! I still have to get that 10000 one Saor Alba spoke of myself. That "Someday" is sometimes farther off than I realize - HA! Anyway, cool notes!
  11. Ah! A lovely senorita on a lovely banknote. Quite a nice acquisition there - Congrats!
  12. Nice notes... I like the fish swimming past the mountain best of the group.
  13. Got this Gold Certificate today. It's my first one, and I like it, but I want to get one of the large sizes next... love their orange backs on the large sizes.
  14. Yeah, they are pretty cool notes. I'm surprised that they have removed the king as well, but I agree that the mountain is a good replacement.
  15. Well, I got these all the way from Kathmandu today. I was alarmed at seeing the famous Green Inspection tape from Customs as it was sent Registered Mail, and I was thinking that there be some handling of the individual notes. THere wasn't. It just feels weird to know that someone has gonge through your mail though. I wouldn't care if it was junkmail, but whatever. Anyway, they have a good home now.
  16. I've actually been wanting one of these for a few years. I finally found one. Doesn't seem like they'd be hard to find, but ... well, I guess it depends on where you look. I've got this one now.
  17. Very Nice! Congrats! I've been waiting too, but I might just have to get it anyway. Post a nice scan when you get it!
  18. Very cool note and story! When I first saw it I thought it WAS the old note paired with a new one. I'd likely passed by this note before making the same assumption. Thanks for the pic and info!
  19. Cool note! I like the diving scene too! Hurry up with the next one, will ya'?! haha
  20. All very nice notes there! Your collection is multiplying like a couple of rabbits!
  21. Just couldn't wait, so I went ahead and got this lovely new set from Uganda.
  22. Nice notes! I've always like the Tunisian note, but just haven't got it yet.
