  1. scored a good haul today at work. went to the bank to get change for the register, got 1 roll of nickels & 6 rolls of pennies (didn't really need nickels, but didn't need 10 rolls of pennies, either). anyway, the teller threw them into the bag, along with the dimes and quarters (3 US Mint rolls of '04 Texas). got back to the restaurant, went to toss the rolls into the bottom of the safe, when something caught my eye. the single roll of nickels had a single word written on it -- "silver". opened it up, sure enough, a whole roll of war nickels!!! all of them are well circulated, but did find 2 lamination errors in the lot. my coin-junkie neighbor bought the roll off me for $30.00. not a bad return on $2 in less than 8 hours time.

  2. Tiff....

Where did you get that Romania 1 Leu?

Ive been looking for one to go with the rest of my polymer notes, but I havent been able to find any at a decent price.....

    KFC :ninja:

Need to talk to banivechi. He lives in Romania, could probably work out a fair trade with you.

  3. Working in a restaurant that handles a lot of cash, and having all the cashiers know that I collect coins is always a good thing. Today, the cashier approached me with a dull looking piece of metal and asked if it was Canadian. I told her no, it was American, just old. I traded her a new quarter for it, and went about my business without really looking too closely. (I don't collect US stuff, so I only look to get stuff like this to pass on to other collectors). An hour or so later, on a smoke break, I dug it out.

Not the greatest thing in the world, but still something very unusual, especially in the smaller, somewhat rural town that I am in. Headed to the auction section to list it, now. Anyone interested??

  4. Correct me if I am wrong, but I believe that the difference in flan thicknesses has nothing to do with how thick the coin is. The difference is in the thickness of the upturned "rim" edge of the coin. The normal variety, as with the other dates and other denominations, has a quite thick "rim", while the variety has a much thinner "rim".

  5. I like to know when was this Afghanistan 1000 Afghanis  issued. From what I gathered from Ron Wise website, there seem to be a 1979 and 1991 issued banknotes. Can I safely conclude that this series was from 1970s to 1990s. Unfortunately, I still have not got hold of Standard Catalogue of World Paper Money. Would appreciate that someone can furnish and confirm the year of issue. This piece has a solid 4000000 serial number. Thanks.  :ninja:

It is dated 1991. The Afghani's use the solar Hijri calendar. To determine the actual year, take the SH year (1370 on your note) and add 621.

edit to add: It is listed in the SCWPM as P#61c.

    61a is dated SH1358 (1979)

    61b is dated SH1369 (1990)

  6. My newest indulgence and identification project.  I am thinking maybe 1600's European? Any ideas? It's about 19mm and appears to be silver.

Looks like it might be Serbian.

    It is a "banner" type.

Legend looks like it reads "UROSIUS | REX | S STEFAN", which would be either King Stefan Uros I Nemanjic (1243-1276) or King Stefan Uros II Milutin (1282-1321). These were made to look similar to the issues of the Doges of Venice, as the Venetian coins were introduced to the region during the 4th crusades of the early 1200's. If you notice, most of the Venetian pieces have DUX (Duke), vertically between the figures on the obverse. Yours, as most Serbian pieces, has REX (King).

  7. My brother-in-law (wife's brother) and his wife are moving back to the States from Merrye Olde and in advance of that, sent us a CARE Package.  Inside was a GUY FAWKES 2-Pound coin in an explanatory folder.  On the edge: "Remember Remember the Fifth of November."

sweet. that is on my shortlist of "buy soon" items, but it keeps managing to get bumped down everytime I go shopping for coins.

  8. clam shell?

    any chance for a picture?

I call them clamshell cases, I don't know what the "official" term is. Kind of like the little hinged box that rings and some other jewelry come in.

I don't have a camera, so it is virtually impossible for me to capture 3-D images. I did post the photos of the sets that I grabbed from the auctions that the sellers provided. They are shown in a thread in the British forums, if you care to wander down there.

Eventually I will get a digital camera, and then I will have to take a week or six off from work, lock myself in the den, and re-image my entire collection. :ninja:

  9. 2 packages today, both from across the pond.

    first package:

    1994 50p D-Day folder

1999 £2 Rugby World Cup folder

    second package:

1969 clamshell case 6-piece set of decimal coins (matches perfectly my 1968 clamshell case 5-piece set, which doesn't have the 50p) [a special thanks to Aetheling for helping with this one]
