  6. Everything Christian said is right. A 2006 Gigante is 17 Euro, but the s/h will be much more... You can try to order from the Italian State Mint bookstore (It's the only one I've found that ships to the US): - Go to: http://www.libreriaipzs.com/PagineD/Catalogo.asp?ID=10200 - Click in "Ordina" at the right of the book you want - Below "qnt" write 1 - In "SELEZIONARE LA NAZIONE DI APPARTENENZA" choose USA (Yes the book is 17 Euro but the s/h is 32 Euro ) - Click in "Completa l'Ordine" It's likely that you'll need a credit card... Other options: You can check Italian Ebay or browse the Italian coin forum: http://www.lamoneta.it/ Jose
  7. Well, as a owner of a 50x0.01 grams scale I'm very pleased with it, never had the need to go over 50g and if it's a scale only for coins you won't need 100g (with very few exceptions of course) and the 0.01g precision helps to keep the paranoia away from your head... And you'll find a caliper very useful too. Regarding loupes, if you don't want to spend money on a Bausch & Lomb, and don't want to go over 10x, most of the loupes will be OK although i would like to test the loupe in person, there's no chance of getting one in Finland? BTW, how annoying are your customs? Taking a look to British and German Ebay may save you some time. Jose
  8. Tha large date is the year of the law regarding the issue of the coin, if there were minted coins in the same year, yes, the star would have that same year. I don't think there were coins with "57" on the star, but i remember that large 5 pesetas exists with 1949*49. Jose
  9. The Spanish minted these large types until 1989 (some types), since 1980 there was the World cup series, the 1 Pta. became alum., there was a smaller 100 Ptas. (about the size of a pound) and new 200 and 500 Pesetas coins. (These large coins no longer had the minting year on the star! Note that "Franco" coins circulated all these years alongside "King" coins"). I used to go to Spain a lot and don't remember seeing "large" and "small" coins mixed together, i'm guessing they were out of circulation in 1990??? Jose

  11. Tane, These "Mark" specimens should be very rare, especially after you have corrected: "O banco dos minorities nacionais do coinpeople.com" to "Banco das minorias nacionais de coinpeople.com" José
  12. It should be 15g X 0.9, but to be sure just weight it, if it weights 15g than it's 15 x 0.9, if 16.66(6)g than it's 15g pure gold... José
  13. Of course Erik, also TYpe and TyPe and many others, that's why i used (...) José
  14. That's an easy question to me, in Portugal, both decimal and "steam struck" coins were first issued in 1836 (1835 law altough some old system coins were struck after that). José
  15. Type, tYpe, tyPe, typE... José

  19. ...Since the 2nd republic, definitely (before we had mainly crosses, COA's, kings and queens or woman faces... ) Replying to the topic question, let's say I'm an involuntary collector of coins depicting ships or naval themes. Jose
  20. Here's a pic of the Portuguese coin of these series, it was the first Portuguese commemorative Euro coin in "Silver": From INCM's website Jose
  21. That's a very nice example of a Katanga Cross, i remember seeing those at Lisboa flea market (from Angolan sellers) for 1000 Esc. a piece (around 5 euros), but i was never drawn into collecting "primitive money" so i never bought one. Jose
  22. Bobby, It's only "Gigante" not "El Gigante", Italy is not a Mexican state (honest!)... It lists the coins of Italy from 700 to date. Links: http://www.gigante.it/sito.htm (publisher - sold out) http://www.alexfilateliaenumismatica.it/cat042.htm (store) http://cgi.ebay.it/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewIt...ssPageName=WDVW (current auction) Jose
  23. Here's a couple of examples: http://numismata.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=148 http://numismata.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=153 Both were made for economic reasons, the Brazilian one was made to take advantage of the large quantity of Spanish silver already circulating in Brazil. The Azores overstrikes were made to avoid that the coins would be taken out of the islands. Jose
