This occurs with die caps. It occurs when a die is capped and then a struck coin gets fed into the chamber and is struck by the cap leaving an incuse design in the die cap. This die cap then strikes out coins that have a raised, yet distorted image of the obverse of the coin.

I hate to disagree... but the colors on the 2 cents posted are completely different... its true that the early lincolns come in many different shades due to planchet mixtures... but having handled more then 50 unc S VDB's I have a pretty good idea what colors the TPG's like and what color (tho it may be original) they dont. In the case of this coin... i like the details... it looks like it has solid 62 shot 63 details... and like kurt said the pic might not be the best representation of the color... so we will see what the TPG says

Die Polish - This occurs when the dies are being cleaned. The dies are regularly cleaned to prevent them from being clogged with grease and debris. This cleaning can leave marks on the dies surface and the coins it strikes.

funny story... i never went back to that shop... and with my little kid ambition i said to myself that i would one day put them out of business for being jerks... the day that i signed the paperwork finalizing the shop i now run... that other shop closed their doors forever.... the same day.... still gives me the shivers...

When I was a wee lad about 9 years old... I was thrown out of a coin shop because I didn't have an adult with me... (I ran ahead of my dad because I was excited to get to the coin shop)... that was my first experience with a coin dealer.... glad to say it did not discourage me...

I have owned or handled proof coins struck through wire.... grease....metal shavings... hair... fabric... it is very common on business strike coins... not so common on proof coins... but it does still happen... from the pictures i cant see much...

if you look at the reverse... from those pictures it does appear that a lot of the lettering is gone... speaking from experience here every off metal I have seen has had a lot of detail to it... the modern ones never circulate long...vending machines kick them out... and sorting machines at banks kick them out too... I have rarely seen one missing as much detail as the coin posted. Is their any chance to get a few pics of the edge of the coin? what you will want to look for there is at the 3 o clock position of the obverse... that area appears to be the closest part of the coin to the collar.... if that part of the coin is of normal thickness then it dosen't rule out an off metal as that part of the planchet should have been touching the collar.. if it is thin... that will about %99 rule out an off metal strike... honestly i still think its an acid job the mark on the back looks like a place where acid started to break through the surfiace of the coin...

hmmm... this is a weird one... it almost looks like it circulated for quite some time before being found...thats very unusual for an off metal... also what is that on the reverse under the building? My guess is an acid job.... but not having it in hand I can't say for sure....

looks like a minor misaligned die error....this is pretty common in early Lincolns...
